Uploading historic data from Suunto and TomTom to Strava

CBross

Morning all,

This is Christoph from Germany, happy to join the Strava community!

Can I just ask, how I can upload historic data from my TomTom and Suunto watch to Strava, pls?

Did not find on the Internet what I was looking for…

Cheers, thanks,

Christoph

Hi CBross,

Thanks for writing in! Have you tried the tips in the "TomTom and Strava" and "Suunto and Strava" articles yet? If not, I'd recommend starting there.

User droopyougo asked a similar question about TomTom and data earlier this week, which was replied to here. Take a look as it also may be helpful!

Let us know if this helps.

Best,

Hi all,

Since I guess this is a recurring topic, I want to share my experiences importing my past activities from Suunto App into Strava.

  1. First you need the data. I used Mytourbook to dig the .fit files from Suunto's databases. Note that obviously the Suunto API has a limitation of concurrent connections, hence you need to specify a time range (in Mytourbook) that results some tens of activities. I downloaded half year at time, for past 8 years.
  2. Once you have the files, you need to filter out .fit files without GPS track information. This is because Strava import declines to ingest files without position data. I used a rule of thumb that if a file is less than 1kB, then it most probably does not contain a GPS track. Worked well for my exercises.
  3. Finally, when you have the set of files to import, in my case around 261, you need to keep in mind that Strava for some reason has a limit of 100 uploads per day. This is in addition of selecting max 25 files at time. The 100 upload per day limit is undocumented, though. Maybe this has been put into place to restrict bots or whatsoever, but for me it meant that I had to take 3 days to upload all my files.

The end of the story is that I now have happily all my past GPS enabled exercises in Strava and can therefore track my progress over past decades 🙂
