I'd like to see snowmobiling added as a sport. I use Strava for running and swimming, would like to use it for tracking my snowmobile rides as well. Right now, I'm picking backcountry skiing, just to get something wintery and distinguish it from my other activities.

Thanks!

Thank you for your suggestion to add snowmobiling as a Sport Type. Your idea has been shared with the product team. Right now, we aren't exploring the possibility to add motorized sports on Strava. In the meantime, we invite you to explore the available sports types on our platform (more than 40 and counting). Thank you for being part of our community and we look forward to seeing you on Strava!

I'm bumping this with a +1 because Strava acquired FATMAP.

A little context. Snowmobiling has two different distinct types of riding. On trail, similar to skiing groomers, and backcountry, similar to alpine touring. Backcountry riding is very dynamic and involves quite a lot of movement with high heart rates while trail riding is much more "motorsports" like in that you're relatively idle and not particularly active.

A higher heart rate isn't the only thing backcountry snowmobiling shares with alpine touring. It also shares the same, sometimes higher, risk of avalanches. Route planning is really important and having a good understanding of avalanche terrain is critical.

Because Strava acquired FATMAP, I can now easily see my past tours in FATMAP via my profile and re-assess my route planning for future outings. I can't easily do this with my backcountry snowmobile routes because there's no appropriate activity type in Strava.

So:

  • Backcountry snowmobiling has elevated heart rates and is quite dynamic, making it more in-line with other fitness sport types in Strava.
  • Backcountry snowmobiling benefits from route planning and has high avalanche dangers so better integration with FATMAP would result in better safety for riders.
