To me Strava is primarily about motivation and KOM gongs/trophies are a big part of this. As you get older it gets harder to compete for overall KOM/QOM gongs. So it would be good to have age group gongs, i.e. top 10 in age group.

I agree with this. We shouldn't be kicked into the long grass because we are old and no longer matter as athletes. We are premium subscribers and entitled to appropriate recognition for the fact that we are still making the effort to complete against each other

Thanks.

Segment age group and weight class leaderboards are already available in the App and on the Web. Here is what it looks like on the web:

Ryan, I know about the leader boards, I’m talking about the top ten gongs similar to those you get for the KOM/QOM that are visible to everyone viewing the activity.

Oh I see sorry you want segment trophies (gongs??) for getting top 10 within an age group. I think this would be better than the bloated badges for segment PRs (don't give me a PR badge for third place the third time I complete that segment...)

Sorry, yes gongs = trophies. I’m still clinging on to a small handful of KOM trophies, but it would motivate me massively if I can continue this with my peer group.  Of course an overall KOM/QOM/top ten trophy would usurp an age group trophy.

  • Giggi, absolutely agree. Unfortunately folk are only likely to give this idea kudos if they are in one of the older (or should I say ‘more senior’) age groups so it’s not going to get as high a rating as perhaps it deserves.

It would be interesting to see what the Strava administrators think about this - especially if they are not in an age group that’s not directly affected by this. I hate the idea of cluttering up Strava with trophies but this seems like it would give recognition to a large proportion of their subscription base.

@ScottyB this is an interesting discussion. Would you mind editing the subject of your idea to include the word "trophies" or specify the kind of achievement you'd hope to see? You can also see if there's a fitting label to add to your suggestion. This way it'll be easier for others to search and vote on, too.

Hi Soren,

how do I edit the title?

100% agree with this.  The QOMs in my area are mostly being swept up by younger 40-somethings, or wheel huggers.  At 55yo, getting those QOMs is a lot of hard individual effort and I would LOVE to see what my actual peers are capable of doing.

I think it will be a great feature if you create a title like KOM for people older than 55 , 60 or 65 years. This will push the battle for Koms for best agers. It will be great motivation to reach the Seniors crown for riders over approximatly 60 years old. It will motivate also younger riders when they see what power elder riders have.

Such a masters KOM will motivate more people than the local legend title. The local legend title says nothing about the power of the rider it can be cancelled asap

Greetings Axel

@Axel  I like idea, just wondering about implementation...

As a paid subscriber, already you can sort segment leaderboards by age groups. Do you find this feature to be lacking? Maybe because most people will not see and recognize that you are on top of your age group?

Where do we draw the senior age line, and why? 50? 55? 60?

What would this look like in the app? I'm guessing maybe below the All-Time categories on a segment page, it lists:

All-Time (Masters)

All-Time (Masters Men)

All-Time (Masters Women)

I think Masters sounds better than Senior. But in running, Masters is often officially 40+. So that's another question to consider. Do we then open up a can of worms by having Master (40+) AND Senior (60+)? And that sort of brings us full circle, because we already have age groups.

Maybe it would be helpful to allow ALL strava members to view ALL age group categories on the app? Right now I can only see my own age group. If everyone could see all of them, maybe it would create more of a sense of public recognition?

I agree. Age group KOMs should be first class KOM trophies. I'm 60, and realistically, not competing with the young guns here in cycling mad Vaucluse.

Any age group KOMs I have should appear on my profile. Perhaps in a different tab from the "all time" KOMs I got 5 years ago (or last week during a howling Mistral but let's not talk about that... 😀)
