There are, already, a bunch of posts asking for a category for the contributor's niche sport (I've made two including a sport I don't do, but my family do). Motivation appears to be to give a sport an equal status but, sometimes, more importantly and altruistically, to avoid polluting another category (such as tagging a horseride as MTB).

I think an "other" category would be a good place to "park" activities that users don't want to delete but that don't fit into an existing category?

I've always considered "Workout" to be the Other category, and I would assume a lot of other users do too.

However, there are some potential pitfalls of a catch-all Other category, including Workout.

Perhaps the biggest downside that I've found is the specific type of data displayed.

For example, runners like to see minutes/mile or minutes/km, whereas cyclists like to see MPH/KPH. The preference for water sports varies depending on the sport, and likewise for winter sports.

When you select Workout, you don't get any speed/velocity data listed in your activity.

So I would support an "Other" category that also features the ability to choose which type of speed data to include. For example, choices could be:

MPH/KPH

minutes per mile/km

Knots

minutes/100yd or 100m

@eric Yeah, indeed there does need to be a way to specify speed type as you state and names matter. "Other" is prefferable to a word like "Workout" that has certain implications in terms of effort. I commute regularly via unicycle and do not consider my commutes workouts, particularly if I am just cruising along.

Hello. We wanted to let you know that your idea submission from August regarding "other activity type" has received little support from the Community and will not be added to our Product Roadmap in the foreseeable future.  The idea submission will be archived.  We would recommend you use the generic "workout" as an activity type when nothing else is a good fit.

Please note that your feedback is valuable to Strava. As stated in our Community Idea Guidelines, we receive many idea submissions each week, and realistically, there may be various reasons that prevent us from including an idea on our Product Roadmap.

We want to thank you for taking the time to submit your idea and we look forward to your continued contributions to the Strava Community.
