Would it be possible to have "elevation gain" on segments?

At the moment we only have "elev diff" (elevation difference between the lowest and highest point on the segment) which is useless.

I definitely support this.  The difference in elevation from start to end is, as you stated, useless.

Support the idea as well 🙂

Yes! Please remember about the "thumb up" if you support it. Many thanks!

I have some segments that show as flat 0% segments even though the segment goes to a top of a mountain and back to the start point.

This needs to be fixed. The assumption that a segment has to be short and have only one climb or one descent is wrong.

@anchskier The current formula for the elevation gain is NOT the difference from start to end but as greg_m has posted, between the highest and lowest point. The difference from start to end what you've described as useless is exactly what greg_m wanted it to be.

@Silentvoyager The Avg. Grade shouldn't be fixed because it's correct the way it is. There is no useful way to calculate it otherwise.

In my opinion the current combination of highest-lowest point and Avg. Grade between start and end is okay so, because both give different and useful information about the segment. But an additonal elevation gain between end and start like greg_m wants it can't hurt.

@Jan_Mantau - What I stated was "useless" is the elevation difference between the start and endpoints.  In a loop segment, that would be zero which tells you nothing about what happens in the segments.  What Greg M is looking for is total elevation gained throughout the segment.  It would be all of the climbs within the segment added together, not just the difference between the start and finish points.  Likewise, the difference between just the highest and lowest points is also not very helpful because it doesn't take into account any downhills in the middle of the segment.  A segment that is a continuous climb is vastly different than one that goes up and down a number of times along the way.

@anchskier Your'e right, a cumulated gain for the segment like the one for a complete ride would be very useful. Maybe this is what greg_m meant but he didn't elaborate it and Soren opened the idea for Kudos without asking for clarifications.

@Jan_Mantau  - yes. this is exactly what I meant. I thought it described it clear enough. An "elevation gain" is a cumulated elevation over a segment.

As @Silentvoyager said - the existing "elevation difference" is useless, especially on loops or generally on segment with similar elevation for start and finish.

Appreciate guys your Kudos. Maybe they will add this function in a foreseeable future.

Hey everyone, we appreciate the discussion happening around this suggestion and the clarification that was obtained. Apologies for not having asked for more elaboration originally, as I had assumed that the total cumulated elevation in a segment is what had been proposed! Thank you for all of your input, I'm glad we're on the same page now!

Definitely agree that "elevation gain" ie "total ascent" on segments is essential - for me and probably for most users.

I agree that simply having "elev diff" (elevation difference between the lowest and highest point on the segment) is not adequate.

By way of elaboration, all of my routes and segments are planned around achieving best "elevation gain" - and not to be able to measure this with Strava is disappointing.

Many of Strava's competitors provide this option.

When looking at a new walking activity on iPhone in Strava, I have noticed that when I click on a newly completed activity for the first time, I am given the option to "Analyse" the workout, which is extremely useful as it shows a reasonably helpful depiction/graph of height gained over the workout. Two comments:

1. On re-visiting the workout, this option to Analys disappears and I am invited to Save the Route which involves Subscribe or Register first, which I may do later but not now.

It appears the only way of revisiting the elevation graph is to Create a Segment first. Is this correct? And why is the initial option to "Analyse" activity only available once?

2. This graph is also viewable on desktop computer and can be closely inspected for height gained ie total ascent for the activity. When doing so, height gained is usually 20-30% different from the "Elevation Gain" figure shown, which seems a large discrepancy.

Gain and descent, not just gain.
