There should be a way to export a segment as a GPX file or convert a segment to a route. There are some very long FKT style segments that may be quite hard to follow without navigation (on an external device).

Even though some devices (higher end Garmins and Polars) have live segment features, in my experience that works very unreliably, especially when running on trails. Exporting a segment as a route is a feature that I'd have really appreciated in a number of occasions.

Thanks for submitting your idea. It has been reviewed by our moderation team and is now open to voting. I do want to add that long, complex segments are not ideal for a multitude of reasons, but since all segments stem from an activity, it may sometimes be possible to find the original activity (if you know who the segment creator is) and therefore create a route from it.

In general it is impossible to tell who the segment creator is and from which activity it was created. In the past I used to create my own routes mirroring some long segments, but that is a time consuming process. I'd rather rely on the Live Segment functionality in my Garmin watch, but unfortunately Garmin's implementation is super unreliable. It seems to have extremely low threshold for going off-segment and aborting tracking, and not resuming it again.

Long complex segments have usages beyond the original idea of the segments as short sprint like efforts:

1) FKTs which are becoming increasingly popular, especially in trail and ultra running. Strava segments would be perfect for tracking FKT efforts.

2) Virtual races or virtual club events. Segments provide a reasonably simple and straightforward way of recording race entries in a leaderboard.

Personally I particularly like racing long (5+ mile) segments on a complex terrain where an element of navigation is involved. There are certainly segments like that - some of them map FKTs and others usually represent some well known summit routes or loops.
