I find it useful to be able to see the Heat Map data on the Route Building page, especially when considering rides in areas I am not so familiar with.  However, I was recently caught out in an area where the Heat Map data suggested many cyclists had passed but the path is now blocked by a fence (that looks to be several months old).  I understand the global Heat Map uses "all time" data - it would be useful to be able to filter this to show, say, data for the last 6 months, to help get a better idea of where I can feasibly ride.

Thank you !

I love this Idea! This feature would also be great for personal heatmaps. Imagine what a great visualization it would make if you are able to drag the time-line and see how your heat map populates over time.

FWIW, I have noticed in the Strava app that, under the map settings, where you can switch the Global Heatmap on and off, there is a text saying that  the Global Heatmap is for the previous year. I assume that this is valid on the website as well.

@5amClub, for personal heatmaps there is already such a feature, more or less. On the website you can, as a subscribed user, go the Heatmaps menu and select a year. In the app you can even select a customized time window.

@weisswurst - thanks for the info.  I wasn't aware of the functionality to look at personal heatmaps for each year - it's interesting to see how my riding habits have changed.  However, it doesn't quite achieve what I was looking for, which is to get ideas for new rides and hence to see where others have been riding recently.

@Ian I know. My comment about the personal heatmaps was a response to @5amClub 😉

In contrast I have a related question/request, I noticed a recent change to the global heatmap which eliminated a lot of unmarked trails in my area, and I see the main heatmap page says heatmaps are limited to the past year of global activity, is there any way modify this feature to still view older heatmaps? While I agree with the original post by @Ian that filtering out inactive trails is useful, there are also a number of trails that get very infrequent use that I would like to continue exploring, so having the option to view old or underutilized trails would still be helpful.

Hey @randumbbear -- that is correct, the global heatmap on the Maps tab in the mobile app as well as the global heatmap on the website will display the past year of activity. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to view previous years of the heatmap right now.

The routes people take during peak hour are very different to the routes they take at 5am on a weekend. Being able to filter for time periods would be a big help to plan a route for a particular purpose e.g. weekdays 6 to 10am would help plan a commuter route.

Anyone know if there is planned any update on this? I would love the ability to manually set the time period for the global heatmap. Where I live, people use different paths during winter, versus summer. As an example, I have heat paths straight across lakes even during the summer, since people are skiing across the frozen lakes during winter. Also, there are alot of trails that are only available during a specific season.

Being able to filter in a more granular manner would be helpful.

For water sports for example - splitting it out swimming/sailing/canoeing/sup etc would be powerful

Also splitting walking vs running.
