I think it would be cool if Strava showed a live stat for how many athletes are active at any given moment.

What is it?

An athlete can go to a page and see how many people around the world are recording an activity right now (separate stats for running, cycling, swimming, walking, working out, or playing any sport).

Why is it important?

Inspiration. When we see that there are many people around the world working out right at this moment, it gives us inspiration to also go work out. It also gives us confidence that we can do it too (if so many people are doing it right now, we can too). And it's cool to see the number of athletes working out around the world.

How does it work?

I think it could live under challenges so that anyone can see how many people are working out right now. Another option is to put it as a link athletes can access from the Strava website that doesn't bother the user experience. It could be divided by country, state, or city if the athlete wants to go into a detailed view.

There's at least one technical glitch you need to explain to me. I think the vast majority of cyclists are using bike computers that aren't connected to the cellular network while they ride. I for instance just did a two hour ride today, and Strava was unaware of it until I uploaded the file.

There's no way Strava's servers could be made aware of "recording right now" with the current watches and head units most of us use.

Nice idea, though.  I, too would like to see some daily/weekly/monthly stats on the number of uploads, miles, and so forth.

Good point. I think it could only show athletes using the Strava app to track.

I wonder if there could be a work around where Strava syncs every 10-15 minutes with a fitness app that is turned on. This allows Strava to know if a recording is taking place.

Seems too tech heavy and there may be privacy restrictions from automatic syncs while recording.

@JBW-Florida certainly raises a good point, though.

@Shant Strava can't sync with fitness apps, watches or other devices during the recording if those aren't connected to the internet and anyway it's not Strava who would have to do that but the recording software. Even the Strava app itself doesn't have to be connected to the internet during the recording. So I would say the idea is nice but completely impossible to implement.
