Most cyclists think in terms of kilometres. Most runners in the UK and US think in terms of miles. My thinking is with the most, so I have my Garmin set to display kilometres cycling and miles running. But Strava forces me to choose one or the other. This poses me a problem: as a cyclist I do not understand how far or fast a ride is when distance and speed are expressed in miles, while as a runner I do not understand how far and fast a run is when distance and pace are expressed in kilometers! Please could you fix it so that I can display my rides in kilometers and my runs in miles, just as I do on my Garmin. Thanks!

I agree, The ability to set default units (imperial/metric) by activity type would be great!
I am training to Nordic Ski and had to switch everything to km and now lost the ability to check my pace on runs because I know it only by Minutes/Mile.

I would also love the ability to switch units just by tapping them on my activity. If I've done an activity and my units are set to metric, when someone who uses Imperial talks about my pace I can't tell them what it is in Imperial.

I agree Paul!

I think in terms of miles and min/mile pacing when running, but think in terms of metres when swimming, yet when looking on strava it forces me to view everything in imperial measurements which is so annoying as I don't understand min/yard pacing when I look at swims as I am not familiar with yards!!??

I think it would be so useful to be able to select what unit of measurement Strava shows us for each sporting discipline and hope they add this feature 🙂

I agree.  I walk and ride using miles.  I swim in a 25 meter pool.  I track my swims with MySwimPro, and laps are measured in meters.  When I upload that data to strava, it translates to 27 yards per lap.  Would be much nicer to have that data in meters.  Thanks

Just wanted to say I agree. My Garmin lets me choose "Statute UK" as the measurement unit which is a mix of imperial and metric and seems to work reasonably well. But I would rather have more custom control for different activity types or even measurements (e.g. for cycling I might want distance in miles but elevation in metres, while for walking I might want distance in km but elevation in feet!)

As RaySeavers says, this is particularly an issue for pool swimming for people who otherwise tend to use imperial. Pools are almost always 25m/50m and therefore having the distances/pacing in yards makes no sense. (I do occasionally use a 100 yard lido, but I can use the open water mode for that!)

i agree with tim, it makes little sense to me to show swim in yards when 99% of pools are 25m or 50m pools! would be very useful if strava could allow the option to use different units of measurements for different sports

I very much agree, this limitation is extremely frustrating.  Not being able to select between meters and yards for swims is a functionality flaw.  All sports (maybe those logged thus far?) should have the option.  At least the core, swim, bike, run.  Now I have to go into Garmin Connect to get the correct data or convert it manually.  At least have it as a premium feature.

Thanks,

AC

This would be a great option to have and surprised it hasn't been rolled out already. Personally I want to run in kms because I mostly do 5ks and cycle in miles because that's what I grew up with. This should transpose to any device its being used on ie apple watch.

Yes, I’m all for this. I inexplicably think in miles on dry land and kilometres in the water, and an ability to customise per activity type would be great.

Yes. Customise per activity.

Very much needed.

This is standard in pretty much every other fitness app out there, including even the Apple Watch Workout app. Definitely very lacking in Strava.

Agreed!

I'd like to see Strava NOT convert units from Garmin Connect (or whatever is linked to it). I swim in a pool that changes between short course (25yd) and long course (50m) arrangement. My Garmin handles this just fine, as there's a pool length setting I can specify. Strava insists on changing the long course days from meters to yards (I have it set to imperial). This results in numbers that make no sense for a pool, such as today's 1969yds.

@msilv yes Strava allows you to choose between imperial and metric but not choose to have imperial for one activity type and metric for another. Hence the proposal.
