I’d love if you’d split the sport of Nordic Ski into the sports of Skate Skiing and Classic. They are very different sports and many people do both based on varying conditions. Thanks!

Makes a lot of sense. Fully support this.

Yes please.  Garmin separates them.  It would be nice if Strava did too!

Yessss. I'm really happy to see that I'm not the only one wanting this. It's quite an insufficiency with Strava for skiers. It's a no brainer.  As many of you have stated the two types of skiing are not comparable and thus all the leader boards are currently meaningless and more importantly we cannot track our own progress in either.  Has anyone at any point heard from the Strava team about this? I sent an email and upon response I was directed here to the community hub. I'm disappointed that I don't see responses from them, is this hub even monitored? Maybe I'm missing something.  Come on Strava!!

I’ve requested this every few years, for perhaps the last 6 years or so. All I’ve heard is the standard canned response along the lines of “we value your feedback and without users like you we couldn’t make strava better.” But as you already know, they haven’t done anything. But every few years I chime in again.

I don't know how Strava communities work but I'm just here to make this happen

I agree that it would be very nice to split Nordic into classic and skate skiing. They are different techniques and I choose which style I do for specific workouts. A skate and classic workout are not the same thing.

Have been asking about this for years. Strava's ignoring of support for nordic skiers for years combined with the price increase made me decline to renew my premium membership this year.

Polar, garmin, training peaks, suunto all separate skate skiing and classic skiing. Strava just doesn't care.

Strava should separate Nordic Skiing as two separate activities, classic or skate techniques. Similar to how the the Olympics did in 1988. Says a top 1% poster (340 days active in 2022), and a long time subscriber.

Yes, please!!
I've been thinking about this for a long time. Should be an obvious thing.

It would also be really great to have the Analysis features (pace analysis and distribution, heart rate) that are provided with other activity types.

(i) Please split Nordic skiing into Classic and Skate.

(ii) Consider adding a field for equipment. (It works well for running and cycling.) Over time, many skiers have more than one set of skis including the field that already exists would provide useful data for many of us over a period of years.

Yes, please add an option to record which equipment was used for each activity. I use this equipment option for recording my cycling. Currently, I add a video of the skis I've used for each activity. It would be very useful to able to view totals data for specific pairs of skis.    https://strava.app.link/sxCWM1DlKwb

Absolutely please separate them. Training for each one is very different. I am also stuck commenting "Skate" or "Classic" to keep track. As others have mentioned, the segment records are not relevant between classic and skate.

I agree: "it’s a big difference in both technique and speed such that classic skiers will never be able to hold records on courses with skate skiers." And also agree: "I’d like to compare classic today with classic over time on the same segment. But I can’t. Maybe that was a slow skate day. I wouldn’t know."

I was thinking about how Strava could easily do this during my last classic ski. Since skate skiing is so much faster, I would just create a new sport for classic skiing and keep Nordic for skate skiing, possibly changing its name too. This way most segments would remain legitimate since they should be owned by skate skiers in all those places that allow skate skiing and classic skiers would have a chance to populate their own. There are only two issue with this: legends and classic only ski areas. For legends, if Strava institutes this change before next season that will be moot. The affect on leaderboards in classic only ski areas would take a little more work, but perhaps could be managed by an intern who figured out what trails are classic only. No matter what, if Strava doesn’t have a xc skier on its staff, it should talk to some trusted xc skiers—I imagine such skiers would support this requested change as obvious and provide Strava with some good additional insight.
