Start & end ride privacy setting should be disabled by default for virtual rides. With the current implementation, start and finish of races are masked, and segment classification doesn't work if the segment starts or finishes in the hidden zone.

We appreciate this post, @damienw! At this time, Strava applies your account's map visibility settings equally to all activities in order to ensure that any activities which start or finish at a hidden location are properly hidden. We realize that athletes are less likely to perform virtual activities which begin at a location they have chosen to hide than real-world activities. However, rather than defaulting to a lower level of privacy for virtual activities our team wanted to ensure that our athletes' privacy is adequately maintained. For this reason, map visibility settings are applied to virtual activities in the same manner that they are applied to non-virtual activities.

We definitely appreciate hearing about your perspective and will certainly consider this feedback as we continue to develop our product. In the meantime, you can modify the map visibility settings on any of the activities you have uploaded to Strava to ensure that your segment efforts are public.

To edit these settings for an individual activity, click on the ellipses icon on the activity details page. In the mobile app, make sure to press Edit Map Visibility instead of Edit Activity.

How to control your individual activity Map Visibility settings:
On either the Strava mobile app or website, open the activity you wish to adjust and select the ellipses icon (from the upper right-hand corner on the app and left-hand side on the website).

  • Select Edit Map Visibility.
  • Use the sliders to specify the portion you would like to hide
  • Enable the option to Hide Entire Map.
  • To hide a specific address:
  • Press on 'Manage Privacy Settings' in the app or Update your Privacy Settings' on Strava.com and update your default setting for that option.
    • Press on the option to hide the start and end of activities that start at a specific address.
    • You can reposition the radius for existing zones and add additional addresses.

Thank you again for taking the time to share this post with our community!

I love the feature that the start and end of my rides are hidden, no matter where I am. However after spending a lot of time on Zwift this winter I notice that sometimes I miss out on segments starting close after my spawn due to this. Instead of always manually having to override this I would love a feature where you could toggle of hide start/end for certain activity types (virtual, indoor etc.)

Hello. We wanted to let you know that your idea submission from February of 2023 will be archived. While this idea is interesting, we don’t have any immediate plans to implement this and currently aren’t able to prioritize this idea.

Please note that your feedback is valuable to Strava. As stated in our Community Idea Guidelines, we receive many idea submissions each week, and realistically, there may be various reasons that prevent us from including an idea on our Product Roadmap.

We want to thank you for taking the time to submit your idea and we look forward to your continued contributions to the Strava Community.
