Hi everyone,

I realized strava is importing my Apple Watch paddling workout flagged as indoor activity without a map. The classification can be reversed only on the desktop, but map data is already lost at that point. My Strava app is synced with Health with all necessary permissions and the Apple Watch is recording GPS data for paddling workouts, showing it in the Fitness app.

Has anyone a solution?

Hello @Yeti150, while it sounds like you have explored your permission settings, I’d like to specifically confirm a permission found by navigating to:

Settings app (on your iPhone) → Health → Data Access & Devices → Strava

On the resulting page you should see a bunch of permission toggles, one of which being “Workout Routes”. Please ensure that the Workout Routes toggle is ENABLED under both the READ and WRITE permission sections.

Additionally, it is necessary to confirm whether the activity in question captured GPS data. This action can be performed by locating the activity in the Apple Fitness app and locating the map on the activity.

If you confirm that the activity does not contain GPS data when viewed in the Fitness app, this explains why the Strava activity contains no GPS data.

If you confirm that your activity does contain GPS data when viewed in the Fitness app, you will want to delete the current Strava activity so that you can re-import the original activity from Apple Health. To re-import the activity, navigate to the You tab → Manage Apps & Devices → Health. Then, tap the check mark next to the activity you would like to re-import. You will be asked if you would like to import the activity again.

Hi, all permission regarding routes are activated, only cadence is deactivated. The activity is showing a map in the Fitness app as mentioned. If I delete and re-upload, it will still be flagged as an indoor activity.

Has this been fixed? I noticed that this was a problem back in March 25. My watch Fitness app tracked GPS data when doing a Paddling activity using the watch’s native Workout app. You can see it here:

But when it was imported into Strava, it imported with a generic “Workout” type. I have since changed it to “Kayaking”, but it’s missing mapping / GPS data:

Just for further clarification on my last post (UPDATE: which seems to be waiting moderator approval, so not posted yet), I have no trouble importing GPS data for my running and cycling workouts, so this seems to be an issue with just the paddling workout. Last time I tried this was March 25th, so want to check whether this has been fixed or not.

Any response here? I’m going kayaking in a couple of weeks and would love to know if this problem has been solved. Thanks!

Woohoo, I can now confirm that GPS data gets imported into Strava when doing a paddling workout on my Apple Watch. Thanks Strava!
