As a runner and mountain biker I often find new trails by reviewing friends activities. I will often look at their activity while I am out on my ride/run. I would like to be able to pull up their activity map, including their red line track, and tap a compass or similar icon to see where my current location is compared to their activity. Is this possible and I am missing it? If not consider this a feature request.

When you click the “bookmark” icon in the top right corner, the friend’s activity map creates a new route draft that opens on your screen - including your location. That seems to be exactly what you're looking for - and unless you actually save the route, it won't show up in your list of saved routes, i.e. the list won't get cluttered by each of these views.

The bookmark works, thanks! Seems counterintuitive to have to “save a route” and like an extra set of steps, for any map I should be able to see my current location on it but will deal with this work around for now.

You don't really need to save the route - just open the first step of the route saving process, and then close it with the top-left X once you get the information you needed. But yes, it's not exactly intuitive indeed…
