Fitness score

I don't understand the fitness score. If I do a very hilly slow run, then my fitness score only goes up by 1. The same distance on flat tarmac at average pace, my fitness score goes up far more. It doesn't appear to take account of elevation gain or gradients which is annoying.

The fitness score only uses your heart rate and that is on your slow hill runs obviously very low.

Strava's fitness score has nothing to do with fitness. It goes up when you overtrain and down when you taper for a marathon. It should be called "recent training load" instead.

Thanks @Jan_Mantau I did wonder how it worked. I'll just have to work harder on the steep hills then!
