Hello Strava Developer Community,
I am developing a private, non-commercial Strava API integration for an employee fitness challenge organized by our company director.
Each participating employee has an individual goal of reaching 50,000 active calories over a period of six months.
The purpose of the challenge is to encourage employees to stay physically active and maintain regular exercise.
There is no financial prize, winner, official race, or performance-based award. Each participant simply works toward their own individual goal.
Each participant independently authorizes our application through Strava OAuth.
Our application uses the "calories" value from the participant's authorized Strava activities to calculate their personal progress.
For example:
32,450 / 50,000 kcal
64.9% completed
17,550 kcal remaining
The application is private and non-commercial and is intended only for employees of our company. We do not sell Strava data, use it for advertising, or provide it to third parties.
The user interface is a private Telegram bot.
We expect approximately 70 employees to participate, so we would eventually like to request increased athlete capacity.
Before submitting the application for review, I would like to clarify one specific part of the use case.
We are considering an optional motivational leaderboard showing the progress of participating employees, for example:
1. Employee A – 42,500 / 50,000 kcal
2. Employee B – 38,200 / 50,000 kcal
3. Employee C – 32,450 / 50,000 kcal
The purpose would be motivation only.
For example, seeing that another employee is actively training could motivate someone else to complete their own workout.
There would be no prize for first place, no financial incentive, no official competition, and no winner. Everyone still has their own individual 50,000 kcal goal.
Could someone from the Strava team please clarify:
1. Is this individual 50,000 kcal / six-month employee challenge permitted under the current Strava API Agreement and API Policy?
2. Can we use the "calories" value from an authenticated user's activities to calculate and display that user's personal progress?
3. Can we display a motivational leaderboard showing the progress of other participating employees?
4. Would displaying another participant's name and total calories be permitted?
5. Would we need explicit additional consent from each participant before displaying their progress to other participants?
6. If a full leaderboard is not permitted, would an anonymous or aggregated progress indicator be allowed instead?
7. Would this use case be eligible for increased athlete capacity to approximately 70 users after review?
We want to make sure that the application fully complies with Strava's current API Agreement, API Policy and data-display requirements before expanding the number of participants.
Thank you for any guidance.
