Hello Strava Developer Community,

I am developing RUNVERSE, a running platform that includes activity tracking, route exploration, running communities, and gamification.

We are reviewing our integration to comply with the Strava API Policy effective June 1, 2026.

Previously, RUNVERSE imported running activities through the Strava API and used the activity distance to award experience points (XP), levels, and achievements. These gamification values are stored separately from the original activity records.

We have implemented a process to remove cached Strava activity data after the permitted retention period. However, some XP, levels, achievements, and historical XP records awarded from previously imported activities remain associated with users' accounts.

We would like clarification on the following questions:

1. Derived gamification data

Are XP, levels, and achievement records calculated from Strava activity data considered "Personal Data derived from Strava Data" under Section 7.4 of the current API Policy?

2. Retaining previously awarded XP

May a developer retain user-specific XP and achievements after deleting the underlying Strava activity data, provided that the values are not displayed to other users and are not used for analytics or product improvement?

3. Revocation and deletion

When an athlete revokes authorization or requests deletion of their Strava data, must all associated XP, levels, and achievements derived from Strava activities also be deleted?

4. Gamification without persistent Strava data

Is there a compliant way to maintain a permanent gamification system using only activities recorded independently within RUNVERSE, while treating Strava-derived activity data according to the API Policy's retention and deletion requirements?

5. Historical records

If previously awarded XP and achievements must be deleted after authorization revocation, should the developer remove the associated historical XP records as well?

We want to preserve a fair user experience while ensuring that our data handling complies with the current API Policy.

We have reviewed Sections 2.5, 5.4, 6.2, 6.4, and 7.4, but would appreciate clarification on how these provisions apply to previously awarded gamification values.

Thank you for any guidance or official clarification.

Best regards,
Paulo Baia
