We already have the 3D layer in maps/route creator, but it’s not that useful in areas that have relatively minor elevation differences. It doesn’t give a realistic view of how hilly an area is. For example, parts of South London are relativey hilly, but not on a mountainous scale; a 100m elevaton gain looks minor on the 3D layer, but in reality a 100m hill would be quite a challenge in real life.
Therefore I propose a topographic layer option, perhaps similar to what is used here: topographic-map.com Indeed, I often have this website open in another tab when planning a route, because the options on Strava aren’t as good.
