Is this use of Strava activity data permitted?

Hi,

I am developing Kartvideo, an app for orienteering athletes.

With the athlete's explicit OAuth authorization, Kartvideo retrieves only that athlete's own Strava activity and GPS track. The GPS data is then combined with:

  • the athlete's own orienteering map,
  • course/control information,
  • official race split times,
  • and optionally camera footage recorded by the athlete.

The app can create a visualisation/video of the athlete's own race or training session. The video is rendered locally on the athlete's phone and may be exported by that athlete for sharing on social media.

No activity data from other Strava users is used or displayed.

Under the current Strava API Policy, is it permitted to:

  1. combine the authenticated athlete's own GPS data with their orienteering map and race data;
  2. create a derived visualisation/video from that combination; and
  3. allow the athlete to export that video to social media?

I would also appreciate clarification on any retention/deletion requirements for the GPS data in this use case.

Thanks,
Per Erik

In my opinion your app aligns with the Strava API agreement and policy. How the Strava reviewer will see it is not predictable though.

Thanks, that is helpful. My main concern is specifically whether combining the authenticated athlete’s own Strava GPS track with their own orienteering map and official race split data, and then exporting a locally rendered video, could be seen as conflicting with the current API Policy. If you know of any specific policy section or precedent relevant to that use case, I’d appreciate the pointer
