Hi Strava Developer Support Team,
I am writing to request a manual review for our API rate limit increase application, as we recently received an automated rejection email. We strongly believe our application fully complies with all Strava API Agreements and Policies.
Here are our application details:
• Application Name: Pi Runners
• Client ID: 263175
• Developer Email: ngoxuanluon@gmail.com
Our application is a strictly private, non-commercial platform built exclusively for our internal corporate running club (around 60 members) to host internal monthly challenges.
We have already hit the initial 10-user limit, and our remaining members are currently blocked, receiving the 403 "Maximum number of athletes exceeded" error when trying to connect.
To address the common rejection reasons mentioned in the automated email:
1. Complementary Experience: Our app provides a custom internal club leaderboard for employee engagement, which is a specific, closed-group experience complementary to Strava.
2. Optimized API Usage: Our architecture strictly utilizes Strava Webhooks for real-time activity syncing to avoid aggressive polling and minimize API load.
3. Privacy & Security: The app is strictly for internal use. We do not share, sell, or use athlete data for any commercial purposes or Al training.
We have updated our platform to include a clear Privacy Policy, and users can disconnect their accounts and revoke access at any time.
Could you please kindly review our request manually and help us approve the rate limit increase to the Standard tier so our members can join the platform? I have attached a screenshot of our internal leaderboard to demonstrate the app's utility, along with the automated rejection email.
Thank you very much for your time and support!
Best regards,
Ngo Xuan Luon

Maybe Strava doesn’t see it as complementary. You can have private clubs on Strava too.

Hi @Jan_Mantau, thanks for the input! I am the IT Manager and the admin of this running club, working alongside Luon on this application.

You are right that Strava has a great native Club feature, but it doesn't fit our specific tracking needs. The native Strava Club leaderboard only tracks weekly distance and resets every Monday.

Our corporate fitness challenge requires tracking cumulative monthly metrics and hosting custom team vs. team challenges within the club.

More importantly, our internal challenge has strict fair-play rules. Our custom app automatically filters out invalid or suspicious activities by enforcing mandatory data requirements (e.g., activities must include valid GPS tracks, cadence, and heart rate data to be counted).

This specific automatic data validation, team gamification, and monthly time-frame tracking isn't possible within the standard Strava Club UI. That's exactly why this custom dashboard is entirely complementary and essential to keep our members motivated and ensure fair play!

Hi Strava Support Team, just gently bumping this thread. Our internal corporate challenge is currently on hold waiting for this API limit approval. We have fully addressed the automated rejection reasons in the replies above. Could someone please take a quick look?
Thank you!

@anhpln We have no confirmation that any Strava team reads this forum.

Hi @Jan_Mantau

I notice you are incredibly active and knowledgeable on this forum. Seeing how dedicated you are to answering questions here, l was wondering: are you a Strava employee or part of their internal team?

We are really in a tough spot with our APl limit increase request for our running club. If you are with Strava, is there any way you could help us look into this or point us in the right direction?

If you are simply a highly dedicated community member, do you have any advice, experience, or

"insider tips" on how to actually get the attention of the Strava API support team? Our internal event is completely paralyzed right now and we are running out of options.

Any guidance or help you could offer would be hugely appreciated! Thank you!

I’m not from Strava. As long as the app has leaderboards you will have a tough time convincing Strava  that you don’t use Strava data in those leaderboards when you resubmit for the review.

Hi @Jan_Mantau,

Thank you for the direct and incredibly helpful insight! That makes perfect sense from Strava's business perspective. We didn't realize the "leaderboard" concept would automatically trigger a rejection as a competing feature, since our main focus was purely on internal compliance and filtering out invalid activities.

Your comment just saved us a lot of time waiting in the dark for a manual review that would likely fail anyway. We will rethink our approach and adjust our system architecture to handle this internally without conflicting with Strava's core features.

Thanks again for your time and guidance!
