Will any of the updates announced on June 1 impact my ability to sync data from my device to Strava?
No.
Wearable and device integrations are not affected.

How do I build an app with Strava’s API?
The best place to start is by reviewing our
documentation
Note: A Strava subscription is a prerequisite.

What are developer access tiers?
There are two tiers a developer can fall under - our Standard Tier, and our Extended Access Tier.

Our Standard Tier encompasses those who are building an app for themselves or a small group (up to 10 users) without any application review, but allows for that app to grow to up to 9,999 users when it passes review. Commercial developers in the Extended Access Tier get prioritized developer support, higher rate limits, greater user capacity, and eligibility for our Partner APIs. All Extended Access Tier applications require review.

For single users who want to interact with their own Strava data using AI tools, the Strava MCP Connector is a remote MCP server that gives subscribers conversational access. No application development or review is necessary.

What are the athlete limits for each tier?
The Standard Tier supports apps serving up to 9,999 athletes. If your app currently has an approved athlete capacity within that range, you are already in the Standard Tier and no action is required
. To serve more than 10 athletes within Standard Tier, submit your app for review. If your app scales and is approved for 10,000 or more athletes, you would then fall within the Extended Access Tier.

How do I know what tier I’m in?
You can find this value in your
API Settings Dashboard

I’m already a Strava subscriber, do I need to pay an additional fee for API access if I’m in the Standard Tier?
No. The Strava subscription provides you access to the API - there is no additional fee.

I’ve created an app, how can I authenticate other users?
If you’re currently operating as a developer with an athlete capacity of 1, you can now self-upgrade to a new level of access (up to 10 athletes) in the Standard Tier directly from your
API settings dashboard -- no formal review required.

This is designed to allow for exploratory development and to let you build for a beta group, or group of friends/family, without needing to go through our formal Developer Program Review process.

Once I’ve hit my athlete capacity or rate limit how can I get an increase?
You’ve built an app, have hit that 10 user limit, and feel like you really have something great you’d like to share with the world. Or maybe you’ve already got a few hundred users trying out your app and you’re looking to scale.

If this is the case, please submit for review. Please note: increased access is not a guarantee. This should be something you keep in mind when building with our API.

How do I know if I’m using a restricted intermediary platform?
If you’ve created a Strava API application and have entered your credentials on a third party, intermediary site that makes API requests on your behalf, and routes data elsewhere, this is considered a non-compliant use case: These platforms prevent us from verifying how athlete data is being accessed and used downstream, creating unacceptable security risks.

If you are looking for deeper insights and don’t want to build an app with our API, we now offer an MCP for that.

What makes an app eligible for higher access?
We review applications on a case by case basis. Apps that complement the Strava experience, meet our quality bar, and handle athlete data in accordance with our API Agreement and API Policy are considered for higher access. Applications that expose athlete data to third party AI tools or use it in ways that conflict with our terms will not be approved.

When can I start updating my code to use the new base URL announced on June 1?
The new base URL will be available starting January 4, 2027.
