As many of you know, if you want to be the King of the Mountain (KOM), Queen of the Mountain (QOM), or Course Record (CR) holder, you have to have the fastest time on a segment. If you feel that achieving a CR, or QOM/KOM on Strava isn’t in your future but still want to compete in local segments, Local Legends (LCL) is for you!
Launched in 2020, Local Legends is Strava’s way to reward dedication. Rewarded to the person that has traveled a particular segment the most times in a rolling 90 day window, you can become the LCL regardless of your pace or speed recorded on the segment. For those who become a Local Legend, a "Laurel" crown iconwill show next to the segment on your activity page as well as on the segment details page.
To earn the Local Legend achievement, you must match to the segment more times than any other athlete in the past 90 days. Some things to note:
- Efforts older than 90 days will be removed from the overall effort count.
- Only activities visible to “Everyone” will count towards your efforts. Learn more about activity privacy controls here.
- Local Legends is available to all Strava athletes, but only subscribers will see the full histogram leaderboard.
Initially, you could become the local legend on running and cycling segments, however, earlier this year (2023), LCL was expanded to include more activity types. You can now become the LCL on your walk, hike, alpine ski, backcountry ski, nordic ski, and snowboarding segments!

Questions about this? We got you! Check out these commonly asked questions….
Q: Why is my segment effort not counting towards the LCL?
A: This can happen when the referenced segment starts or ends within an area hidden by your map visibility settings.. To read about map visibility please refer to this article. And for more information on all of our privacy controls, please visit our privacy center and take the time to ensure your selections in Strava represent your intended experience.
Q: For new segments, does it count all efforts prior to creation of the segment?
A: No, segment efforts completed before the day the segment was created will not count towards Local Legends. We only count efforts starting from the segment creation date. This means that you may see less than 90 days of activity on segments that were recently created.
Q: I’m tied for the Local Legend with another person, will I see the "Laurel" crown icon?
A: Much like earning a KOM or QOM achievement icon on a leaderboard, there can only be one Local Legend for a segment. The effort that is first processed for the segment will be the one that earns the Local Legend laurel.
Q: If I pass through a segment more than once in a day, will that count only once, or multiple times for the LCL?
A: All efforts from the last 90 days will contribute to a Local Legend segment; this includes multiple segment efforts in a single day. As soon as an effort moves past the 90-day count, it will no longer count towards that segment.
