Hi, I’ve noticed a strange behavior after upgrading from Apple Watch SE to Apple Watch Ultra 3.

  • When I start a run with the Apple Fitness on my watch, the activity syncs to Strava.

  • In Strava, the source is shown as Apple Health, not Apple Watch Ultra 3.

  • All permissions are enabled: Strava is connected to Health, Strava has full read/write access, and Motion & Fitness permissions are on.

  • I also have the Strava app installed on my watch, but I prefer using the native Workout app for recording.

With my previous Apple Watch SE, Strava used to display the source as “Apple Watch SE” (even when I recorded with the native Workout app). After switching to Apple Watch Ultra 3, the exact same workflow only shows “Apple Health” as the source.

My question:

  • Is this the expected behavior now (Strava always labels the source as Apple Health if the activity comes via Health)?

  • Or could something be misconfigured, since it used to show “Apple Watch” before?

  • I tried to reinstall Strava on watch, but it did not helped. Should I try to reinstall Strava on iPhone and Watch and set up completely form scratch?

Thanks for opinions!

The sams for me. Also switched few days ago to ultra 3 and Srava shows Apple Health

Hi @JVilkas, @naurisre, this usually happens after a new watch is released, I remember the same with my (then new) AW9 - for some time the source displayed only as Apple Health, till Strava added the newly released models to the list of devices.

I got the AW Series 11 last Friday and have recorded four activities using Strava on that watch. Currently the Strava website shows no information about what device I used; it just says “Strava”.

Do you remember if you re-added the watch after some time, or was it updated automatically without re-adding?

Without re-adding, if I remember correctly. I’ve checked and it appears that back then, I started using my new AW on September 22 - when it first started showing as “Apple Health", that took about two weeks, and starting with an activity from October 6 it would display the actual AW model again.

Thanks a lot!

Same here. AWU 3 since Saturday and all entries imported shows up as Apple Health. Guess we have to wait a few days until AWU 3 has been added. Worked my my AWU 2

I may be the outlier here but mine are showing up as ‘Strava’ not ‘Apple Health’. Other apps [and accessory makers e.g. Quadlock & Zagg cases] prepared in advance for Apple new product launches- Strava is my one laggard :(

Maybe because you're recording with the AW Strava app? So it's the actual source. Others might be recording with the Apple Workout app and only then import to Strava, which would display Apple Health as a source.

Interesting Jana. I used strava app on AUW2 and it attributed activities to the watch.  The only way I know to use Apple Health and port activities to Strava is RunGap app.  Is there another way? Thanks!

@BostonBill  it’s the same reason - Strava doesn't “know” U3 just yet, that's why it’s using a substitute label.

About syncing from Health - you can do that directly 🙂 Here's how: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917527-Health-App-and-Strava I’m using this setup usually. The one disadvantage compared to using RunGap (which I use too, just for other purposes mostly) is that Strava is still unable to sync running cadence, despite people have been requesting that for years now. You can add your vote here btw:

Thanks🙏🏽 @Jana_S!   I’ll try it this morning.

FWIW: Strava started reporting my new Apple Watch in activity descriptions as of (late) Thursday 10/2.

It’s not retroactive, so I have 13 days of activities that just say “Strava” for the device/software.
