Only Garmin's Overlanding data is not uploaded to Strava, but other types of activities are uploaded properly. What is the problem? Is there a solution?

Hey @kumc747,

Have you already attempted to Disconnect & Reconnect the integration between Strava & Garmin?

I just did 5 activities (pool swim, cycling, running, treadmill, overlanding) as a test. All 5 activities are showing up in Garmin Connect, but Strava is not uploading the overlanding activity. So it doesn't seem to be a connection issue between Garmin and Strava. It looks like Strava is not importing the overlanding activity. Can you test it for me?

It sounds like Strava doesn't recognize “overlanding”  as an activity..?

As a workaround, you should be able to import the activity manually:

  • first, open the activity on the Garmin Connect website
  • tap the gear wheel ⚙️ icon and then “export as TCX” - this will let you save the activity file locally
  • then go to the Strava website, log in, and open https://www.strava.com/upload/select
  • select the .tcx file thst you’ve just saved and confirm
  • the activity now should appear on your Strava profile

The above is just a workaround - if Strava really doesn't recognize that workout type, then it's something that Strava devs need to fix. The manual upload isn't very convenient but might be useful temporarily.

I currently only have a mobile phone so I haven't tried importing the activity manually. I'll try when I can access to a PC. Thanks a lot.

Actually it should work also in a mobile browser if you’d like to try - the other day, I needed to do a similar manual import too, and did it in the Chrome browser on my iPhone. Anyway - fingers crossed that it works for you! 👍

Unfortunately, I was unable to export the overlanding activity from Garmin Connect to a tcx file on my PC, but I was able to save it as a fit file and upload it to Strava. However, data such as elevation and heart rate were missing. When I changed the overlanding to e-bike on Garmin, the heart rate, speed, and elevation data were correctly imported into Strava. In conclusion, Strava cannot automatically import Garmin overlanding data, and although it can be imported manually, there was a problem that some data was lost.

Hey @kumc747,

Thank you for providing your results as it seems like the activity type is the main culprit here.
I’ll be sure to pass this feedback to my devices team so they can take a look to improve this connection.

When you have a general workout tracker (Ex. Garmin Vivosmart) that records a non-core sport, the device will record activities as a Workout and we no longer change it automatically to something else. This just means you'll need to make sure to set the activity type on activities that come in from non sport-specific devices.

Thank you for your patience & cooperation in this troubleshooting process.
Also want to give a huge shoutout to @Jana_S for jumping in to help as well!!✌️
