I would like to start syncing my rides from my Garmin 1040 to Strava. Currently I’m using Apple health but would prefer to use the data from my Garmin device.

Last time I tried this, every ride I’d done in the past got synced and I ended up with hundreds of historic duplicates and a horrible mess to sort out in my Strava account.

How can I set up syncing so that only future rides get synced from Garmin to Strava and not historic ones?

I think that if you went into your Garmin device and had it delete all of the past activity files from the device, you should be good.  It won’t have any old activities to sync when it does connect, so only the new and future ones would transfer.

I’m not sure you can avoid this.  Garmin will upload new activities to Strava once and once only, but all your history is new as far as Garmin sees it.
But, if you do sync it and then delete the duplicates (find them via the calendar view) then they should not reappear again.  Good luck

I’m not sure about that.  Garmin syncs with Strava via a cloud connection not from the device itself.  If the rides are in Garmin Connect (cloud) then I don’t think taking them off the device will matter.
