Heart rate missing when following a route with Apple Watch + Strava

Hi all,

When I record a ride with my Apple Watch, everything works perfectly: I get the full route, heart rate, and all metrics in Strava.

However, when I follow a route (for example a planned route / navigation), the heart rate data is missing, even though the route itself is recorded correctly.

What is the correct way to record a ride with navigation enabled and still keep heart rate data from the Apple Watch?

  • Should the activity be started on the Watch or on the iPhone?
  • Is there a specific Strava or Apple Watch setting required?
  • Or is this a known limitation?

Thanks in advance for your help

Well when I need the Strava map, I open the map on my phone to check it during the activity (e.g. when running a new route, and needing to check where I am & which turn to take), but I don't start the activity recording in the Strava app. That won't create any duplicates, and my HR is recorded as expected.

Not sure whether it's usable for you but maybe it could work..?

Hey @Moi64, this community hub is a discussion forum of users like yourself, it seems that others don't have a solution.

(I run with AW too but personally, I don't use the Strava app to record my activities - I use the Apple Workout app to record and then sync to Strava, as the Apple app has much better customization options for metrics display, pace/power/HR notifications, etc.)

You can try contacting Strava Support / submit a ticket: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917777-How-Do-I-Contact-Strava-Support

@Jana_S I tried to use and same time the map with route. But then you have 2 activities when ready.

but looks like it just don’t work. The this strava app has no use for me as the heartbeat is used to calculate a lot of items when do a workout but need the map to see where to go.

thanks for the answer
