At the bike event night, when waiting to go, my Strava app stopped recording the ride.

 

Tonight I stopped at the gate to open it up, and again the Strava app stopped recording the ride.   With any pause in movement, it appears to finish the ride.

would disabling auto-pause work?

If not, you might want to post which device/OS you're using. Also, double check that you're using the latest version of the app.
