Strava stops tracking during hiking (after a short pause)

At my Samsung S24 the Strava app stops tracking the correct location when I pause to wait for my fellow hikers or watch the scenery …. Only after finishing the activity and returning back before saving it I’m able to obtain a new (GPS) position and continue tracking again. Changing power optimization, location, etc. settings have not resolved the issue. Who has ideas to solve this?

Hmm... 🤨 I’m afraid I’m not familiar with your phone/device settings (I have iOS), so the following is just “thinking out loud”… for whatever reason, after the pause the device's gps doesn't pick up - so you could try eliminating the possible reasons to narrow it down to the actual culprit.

You've already mentioned you had tried playing with battery saving, location services etc. What I can do on my phone is allowing the gps for specific apps to “never”, “once”, “when in use” or “always” - and if I want to make sure that some location-dependent app (not just Strava, but e.g. a weather app) works correctly, I need to allow “always”, so that it works also on the background.

Also, here's yet another thread that seems to be relevant - the author of the thread mentions that disabling auto-pause didn't help either. So if you're experiencing the same bug, you might need to wait for the fix / update the app (I’m not sure whether it's already supposed to be released, it's been almost a month since the fix was mentioned in that thread):

To circumnavigate your problem, I wonder if the simplest solution is to no longer pause the strava app. You shouldn't need to pause. Just let the app continue recording, even when you stop. Once your activity is complete, strava will automatically determine your moving and elapsed times.

Hi DVZ, the issue is that I’m not pausing the Strava recording (not myself, not by auto-pause as noth are switched off). It seems the lack of movement simply stops the Strava app to pick-up correct GPS data and the blue dot is stuck to the place where I paused while walking…..

Hi @Tracker, could it be the same/similar problem as in this thread? The solution/workaround recommended in there would be disabling the auto-pause:

Hi Jana_S, the (2) auto-pause options are both switched off. And, it happens also without taking photos. It is really annoying, as it feels almost like an issue between Strava and the phone (Samsung S24) and/or OS (Android 16; One UI 8.0)

It looks indeed like a similar issue. Difference is that I have been experiencing this longer than for the last month only (like the topicstarter in the link you shared: https://communityhub.strava.com/devices%2Dand%2Dconnections%2D6/known%2Dissue%2Dstrava%2Dstops%2Dtracking%2Dafter%2Di%2Dresume%2Dmy%2Drun%2Don%2Dmy%2Dandroid%2Dphone%2D12287)
