Hi, I’m doing a hill climb series - did this week’s climb this AM and got a provisional time on my wahoo of 7:40 but Strava thinks I didn’t finish the segment and has recorded it as 9 minutes something. The segment ends at the top of a mountain with a drop off and a fence so there is no more path there - is there a way to get this fixed does anyone know? Thanks.

Throw the device over the edge when you finish?

In all seriousness, that is the result of a poorly created segment.  Segments should never start or stop right at an intersection or start/stop point for exactly the reason you just described.  You can submit a support ticket and see if the Strava techs are able to force your activity to match the segment.  Other than that, there isn’t much you can do.  If you happen to know who created the segment, you could have them edit it so the end point is a distance before the end of the trail/road to ensure that people can actually go beyond the endpoint to complete the segment.

And to add something to anchskiers solution:

  • You really should flag the segment as hazardous if it ends after a drop.
  • You could try to create a better segment. There is a high chance it won’t work due to in this case useless duplicate detections.

What I don’t understand is how Strava can give a segment time if it deems the segment wasn’t finished.

One more thing you can do - when you reach the top, turn back immediately and go back. The segment will finish properly - at least it does on my usual hill repeats segment. Not sure how far back you have to go to make sure that the uphill segment finish was registered, I suppose ~100 meters will be definitely enough. And then you can go safely back up and enjoy the view. It's a bit cumbersome but hey, as long as it works...
