I just got a new phone, and after installing the Strava app, I noticed that any time I try to view an activity (either mine or someone I follow) the app crashes. It also crashed if I try to tap on the Maps or Record features. I can navigate the rest of the app features like Groups, If I go to the “You” feature I can also navigate within the Progress option plus I can scroll down my list of activities but just can’t open any.

It has been uploading activities from Zwift and my Wahoo Element IRL rides without issue.

I had a Pixel 6a before and now a Pixel 8 Pro. Same Android OS version/build on both phones and settings for the Strava app are all the same too.

I have done the usual troubleshooting like clear app storage/cache and also uninstalled/reinstalled the app too.

Not sure if it’s a specific feature of the Pixel 8 Pro causing the issues that my 6a did not have but it’s very frustrating.

Thanks for any suggestions offered!

I got the exact same problem. Also a new Pixel 8 here..but got the base version not the pro. But same issue strava crash all the time while wanted to view activity etc. Did also all the same troubleshooting, nothing seems to work. Happy to hear it you find a solution or if someone here can help us?

I submitted a support ticket with them; I will let you know what they say.

Same problem here, also new Pixel 8. I noticed it crashes only when I try to open activities that contain a map, ones without a map open ok. Also crashes when I try to record. Seems map-related.

Word from Strava support is that they are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it. I agree it does seem map related. Hopefully an update will be out soon to resolve the issue!

I have the exact same problem with my Pixel 8. Have tried everything, and more! I really hope there will be a fix soon since I pay for the app.. I tried sending a bug file as they wanted but only got a generic reply ending with a suggestion to send in a bug file.. Which was what I did..

Same issue with the pixel 9, it’s very frustrating. Please prioritize the fix!

Same issue with Pixel 7a

Same problem on pixel 8. Regarding Strava AND Samsung Health

Same problem on a new Pixel 9 Pro, making Strava completely unusable there

No issues with Pixel 8 Pro though, so wonder what the difference is, both updated to the same system update level

Have a Pixel 9, and exact same issue. Every time I try to record an activity it just crashes. Glad I'm not the only one, hopefully they fix it asap

Same problem here with Pixel 9 Pro. Have they fix the issue yet?

They updated the app a couple days ago but it did not address this issue. I’m surprised its priority doesn’t seem that high, so it must only be affecting a very small number of people and Strava isn’t giving any public announcement on the problem.

Maybe it also only affects fresh installs of the OS and/or app, and once you have the cached map data you are fine, so it could be that even if other people could run into the issue, as long as they don’t factory reset they are ok for now.

I'm having the same issue on my pixel 9. So frustrating! When will this be resolved by?

I also have this problem on my pixel 8. Very frustrating. It takes to long before this issue is solved

I think this has something to do with migrating/transferring existing apps/data when setting up a phone. I usually like to do a ‘clean install’ when setting up anything new but thought I’d give the migration a try since it reinstalls most things anyways, but that screwed me and a lot of time was wasted getting to the bottom of this.

Something about what is transferred is outside the Strava app (hence clearing app data / caches does not help) but used by it and is incompatible or corrupted.

I noticed similar behavior from other apps (ex. Wechat chat migration, Line theme download, etc), with same symptoms where the whole ‘Android activity’ (the UI shell on the stack, not necessarily the whole app, unless it’s the only activity open for the app) just crashes instantly and closes.

At this point, I think the problem could be with the Google phone migration or there is just something with these apps and how they use/access data on the device that does not conform correctly to the phone migration.

If anyone wants to test this, you can factory reset your phone, do NOT migrate anything from old phone, and immediately set up Strava and see if the problem goes away. This worked for me and issues with other apps also went away.

Alternatively if you want to continue waiting for a fix (which I’m skeptical would ever come if the issue is with phone migration and is seen in other apps) then you can also use a Strava alternative like Komoot, which Garmin is promoting now instead of Strava, and manually export activities to Strava. Depending on your use-case you may even like Komoot more and just stick with using that instead of Strava.

I tried validate this method and yes. It's working. Here is my step.

1. Backup: Confirm your Google One/Drive backup is current.

2. Reset: Factory reset the phone.

3. Setup Minimal: On reboot, SKIP all "Copy apps & data" prompts.

4. Strava First: Go to the Play Store and install Strava; log in to sync data.

5. Restore Later: Go to Settings \rightarrow Back up or copy data \rightarrow Copy data to perform the cloud restore for everything else.
