Near-Miss Reporting

Importance: Saving lives through crowdsourced data.

Details: It would be great to be able to report point locations on our activities where we experienced Near-Miss incidents, and capture the data (including GPS track, speed, heart rate, power, etc) for a 1/8 mile before and 1/8 mile after (to ensure the data was captured and provide data leading up to the near-miss). There have been countless projects devoted to capturing near-misses, (Close Call Database, BikeMaps.org, Cyclist Video Evidence, NoVA FSS) but not to the extent that the Strava user community reaches and none of them include the GPS track data that Strava captures.

This data should be anonymized and provided free of charge to the user community and government agencies, as it can benefit Strava users and society by helping to reduce near-misses and crashes.

The data could also be included in existing Strava products and features like Strava Metro - Allow agencies to create a bounding box where they can get notified of new reports to take action on and create dashboards from, routing - avoid/heavily weigh areas of high reports, and more directly by audibly warning users when they're coming upon a "hot-spot". Additionally Strava could pull in crash data in include it in a similar way.

Also, add the data from devices such as Garmin Varia radar to be able to see where and when vehicles passed on a ride. This would provide additional data to support the OPs idea.

I love it.

I have a few of such near misses and I would like to be able to show where is the danger to fellow cyclist.

If I had been able to I might have been able to save a life or two already.

I am a member of my city's Active Transportation Committee and was looking to post a similar suggestion.  In addition to the great ideas in this post, sharing anonymized heat maps with city planners responsible for Complete Streets implementation would give them a better idea of bicycle traffic patterns and usage.  Currently my city relies on police reports to identify areas and intersections that need treatment to reduce bicycle and pedestrian hazards. Except for fatalities or sever injuries, most bicycle-involved conflicts are unreported, thus our engineers ability to increase the safety of our streets for bicycles and pedestrians is hamstrung.

We have a 3-foot law and our local police have never cited anyone because they claim they need to see it in person. 3-foot violations and near-misses are leading indicators. Crashes and fatalities are too late. Accumulating anonymized data would help police and city planners identify high-risk locations.

I would like to use a button on my Garmin to tag the location in real-time and then annotate it later on the activity file.
