It would be great if Strava could automatically detect and show negative / positive split for activities (i.e. whether the 2nd half was faster or slower than the 1st). It would be especially interesting for races - achieving a negative split in races is kind of a "holy grail" for many athletes. It would also be great to have the ability to filter by this (i.e. easily getting a list of races with negative split).

Hi @Jana_S

Thanks for posting about this.  Would you be able to provide a bit more detail about what you envision?  You can view a graph of the run splits on the activity workout analysis page on Mobile - the graph shows which way the run is trending in terms of positive/ negative splits.  Here's an example:

It would be great if running activities which have all negative splits, earned a Negative Splits activity Achievement. Maybe only for activities with => 3 splits.

Further, Challenges could then be built around a set number of negative split activities in the period. Perhaps, 4 Negative Split Activities in a month earn a monthly Negative Splits Medal.

This is an entirely data based request and the splits are already displayed in the stats. I believe Strava should already have all the data needed to implement this.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

@Jane thanks for the feedback. Yes I'm aware of the 1 km / 1 mile split chart; what I'm referring to is this,

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_split

Sometimes the chart you mentioned does help to see what I'm asking about - but it has to be a quite major difference to be able to see it right away, such as in this case - clearly a positive split, i.e. slowing down during the race (the 2nd half is much slower than the 1st):

But sometimes it's not that clear. For example this is a negative split race, the second half being slightly faster - but really just a bit, and if I didn't have the 2.5 (half) time from the official race results, I wouldn't be 100% sure (the 3rd km could have been uneven):

IMG_3917.jpeg

And one more unclear example - it does seem like a negative split but again, hard to tell for sure, as the differences are minimal and the middle (3rd) kilometer could have been uneven again:

IMG_3918.jpeg

Sometimes adding up the numbers does the trick but to be certain, you need an activity with an even number of kilometres / miles. But if the difference isn't big, you end up manually calculating that... e.g. here the halves seem to be 25:21 and 25:42, so it's a positive split (confirming the "first glance" impression but if the 1st km wasn't so much faster, it would have been much less obvious):

So basically what I'm asking for is that once the activity is complete and uploaded to Strava, Strava calculates the midpoint and based on that, it shows whether it's a negative, positive or (in those rare occurrences when both halves are equal) even split. Also, when searching in activities list, it would be possible to use filtering to show activities with positive/negative/even split.

I hope the examples help to clarify what I mean, but please ask if any further details are needed 🙂

Hi @Jana_S

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation of what you'd like to see regarding negative splits.  That helps a lot.

Your idea is now open to voting.  I've edited the idea title so it will be easier for others to search and vote on. Thank you for your contribution.
