Often times, I will ride different routes to the same locations on my ride. For example, I live about 5 miles from a nearby bridge which I often ride to. The path I take changes, but the start and end points remain the same. It would be very interesting to see my fastest time between these two points within one ride, regardless of the route.

This is why I suggest the feature of waypoint routes for biking.

Overview:

  1. On a layer within the map, user identifies two (or more) locations by dropping pins.
  2. User can name and save the route (public or private).
  3. Leaderboards generate in a similar fashion to segments with all features and stats (KOM, your personal PRs, attempts, etc.)

In short, this feature is extremely similar to segments, but instead of considering statistics for one continuous section of a ride, only the start and end points are considered for a waypoint route. However a rider gets from Point A to Point B is not considered.

This feature will facilitate exploration to with the goal of finding new routes to take between two waypoints, especially in urban environments.

I actually came to suggest a similar (but more general) feature and found this, so +1. I had this idea from backcountry skiing, where due to conditions and skin tracks people often take different paths to the same point and they don't always register on existing segments. I'm guessing this applies to things like trail running too where there are many trails up a mountain.

I think this feature should also allow more than two waypoints. Then you could create segments like "Chamonix - Mont Blanc - Chamonix" or a mountain traverse where you specify hitting summits and not just taking the passes.

So the format would be "Points A -> B -> C -> ..." and it would register when someone crosses the set of points in order, regardless of the route between the points.

Thanks for submitting your idea. It has been reviewed by our moderation team and is now open to voting.

The idea title was edited so it will be easier for others to search and vote on. Please note I removed the word "route" from the title because on Strava we generally use that to refer to Route planning.  I think us the term segment is more applicable here.

Thanks again!
