Reposted here at request of Soren from Stava, thank you.

I’d like the opportunity to communicate privately and directly with fellow Strava athletes e.g. gear and route questions, co-training opportunities, etc.; things that are too detailed for the comments section. Creating, integrating, and “policing” an internal Strava personal messaging system is daunting, but what about Strava allowing an email sharing “opt in”?

Any athlete could allow conversation through their Strava verified sign-in email but it would be hidden behind a “contact this athlete” button on Strava. Only the receiving athlete would see the sending athlete’s email and they could choose to reply or not reply and continue the communication off the Strava website within their personal email (gmail, yahoo, etc).  The general Strava audience would not see any personal email, just the “contact this athlete” button—unless it is grayed out because the athlete chose to not partake in this form of direct communication.

What are your thoughts and ideas please? Thank you.

I stumbled across this conversation while for searching for how to achieve what is proposed. @SteveWayne I think your proposal is well thought out and FWIW I support it. That it's languished for so long and seems to be regarded with suspicion by some commenters does not bode well for its implementation. Thanks for taking the time to propose it nevertheless.

Thanks to everyone who took time to vote and comment on this idea. We're happy to announce that Messaging on Strava is now available. At this time, messaging is available through the Strava app only. You can find more info here

Ability to change settings/permissions to contact is not available under "My Privacy/Additional Controls" when I am logged into my account (google chrome).  Do I have to change settings via the phone app?

Edit to add: found the ability to change via the app - still unable to change via laptop and web.

A few things to note:

  • messaging is available through the Strava app only
  • to see it in the app you will need to be on the latest version (335)
  • you’ll need to have entered your date of birth in your settings in order to access messaging*

*If you've entered your birthdate and you're still unable to access messaging, please be aware that we have implemented mechanisms to detect and prevent suspicious, underage, or unsafe activity on Strava which may include limiting access to messaging. We are firmly committed to athlete safety, persistently reviewing and improving our systems to uphold the utmost standard of safety and security for all our athletes

Thank you for delivering this, @Scout and the Strava team. Please consider adding this immediate-notification permission in a future update for iOS:

just seen an email, you can access the messaging settings from mobile profile / privacy, not seeing it on Web Browser, here is the article  https://stories.strava.com/articles/introducing-strava-messaging

It is great that you added this but why is it yet another feature that only appears in one place. This time the mobile app. One of my biggest gripes with Strava is that features are implemented in just mobile or just the website. So now I have chat on mobile only and flybys on the website only. Why!?

P.S. I would have loved the ability to add pictures to posts but OK, can live without that for now.

Completely agree with @velocipederider that the App and the Website should completely mirror each other.  So dumb that to look at "Year in Sport" I have to use phone app, but other functionality (flybys, etc) are only available on my computer.  Spotify, for example, seems to work the same on desktop and my phone.

@ShaneZat yeah for a while I stopped using a smartphone (as I wanted to focus on other parts of my life, such as cycling) and this was a constant annoyance. It is still annoying now but at least I can access everything.

That said, Strava is probably the worst of all apps/websites I use for this.
