As an avid downhill mountain biker/snowboarder, it would be cool if Strava worked the way Slopes (getslopes.com) does, where chairlift rides don’t count towards a total activity distance.

+1 this is essential for anyone who rides lifts or shuttles.  Could be done via excluding segments (although this wouldn't deal with vehicle uplifts), or an option to exclude all elevation gain for a given activity.  The latter would mean missing some 'real' climbing (as many park trails typically have a little climb here and there) but this would be a much smaller issue than the current problem of insane climb, power and calorie stats when lifting.

Dear Strava - it is time you finally fix this.

I did some downhill mtb last weekend and racked up distance and elevation (3600+ hm) I never worked for. Especially the elevation gain messes up annual statistics, challenges and leaderboards.

Please roll out:

  • New activity type “Downhill MTB”
  • Exclude lift distances and elevation gain from activity types using lifts (Downhill MTB/Alpine Skiing/Snowboarding/etc)

It seems Strava’s supported activity types follow the philosophy of no motorized help, just human powered. So unlike Garmin, no power boating or motor cross. Excluding those makes  sense. Therefore, automatically remove the work done by lifts to align with your own philosophy.

And no, pausing a watch after each downhill or ski run is not the solution… a simple algorithm would do the trick, like how Garmin excludes lifts when recording on a Garmin watch and selecting the right activity type.

Thanks for considering the above!

Wow this is 9th on the voting page in spite of being suppressed from voting for nearly two years and yet we've had no comment from anyone at strava since 8/1/24, when its as obviously needed change on a fairly expensive app. I've set my subscription to expire barring this getting fixed ahead of that time.

They don't add new sports or modes. They already passed adding volleyball and beach to the service even it had lot's of votes and has billions of people doing it (and Olympic sports).
There is no admins reading these. Total bs this voting feature.

… and in addition to my post (just above): it also messes up my RE, fitness level, segments and best efforts. All paid premium features.

I currently have set my “downhill MTB” activities to “snowboarding” to exclude elevation gains but then I am forced to use wrong activity type, cannot compete/compare on bike segments anymore, forced to use white winter maps - and the lift distances are still included.

That’s an interesting idea! Excluding chairlift rides from total activity distance would definitely provide a more accurate reflection of downhill biking or snowboarding efforts. Just like how Plumbing Sewer services aim for efficiency and clarity in their processes, Strava could enhance user experience by refining how it tracks activities. Hope this feature gets implemented!
