As an avid downhill mountain biker/snowboarder, it would be cool if Strava worked the way Slopes (getslopes.com) does, where chairlift rides don’t count towards a total activity distance.
I selected snowboarding activity for today. Why does it track uphill and assigns records to that. I've used Ski tracks before and that understands that uphill movement is on a ski lift, downhill is when you are skiing/snowboarding. It records both but understand the difference and its the downhill movement that is important. Strava appears to track everything, not realising it should exclude the uphill GPS movement.
Ski tracks had this right over 10 years ago, surprised Strave can't deal with this.
This idea was already requested in the Ideas board, so I’ve moved your post here. This helps us keep the forums organized and makes sure suggestions are easy to find and votes for them aren’t divided across duplicate ideas. As a former software developer, this isn’t a “bug”, it’s a design flaw/omission. Downhill activities shouldn’t include uphill chair rides, period.
I use Slopes to get accurate stats when downhill skiing and I’m thinking maybe it would be better to log a manual activity in Strava and attach my Slopes stats as a photo.
So what's up, Jane or anyone from Strava? I see plenty of action of Strava consolidating threads on this topic but will there be any actual solution to this request implemented?
It’s clear that you should not record skiing/ snowboarding on strava. It’s useless for that. They know the issue, “recording ski lifts as activity”. There are multiple apps that have recorded skiing/snowboarding correctly for more than 10 years and with much more detail.
Strava is ignoring this issue. Either it’s a cost thing or an incompetence thing or nobody reads these message boards and they’ve taken their customers for granted. I’ll probably stick with them for cycling but I’ll use other apps for snowboarding.
Yes totally agree that it’s useless for downhill activities. But I use Strava for all my other activities and it’s nice to have everything in one place. Also, it’s nice to have the automatic upload. But the stats displayed in Strava are incorrect and misleading, so going forward I’m going to add manual entries for my downhill skiing activities.
Janice
Yes! Add a downhill mountain bike option like skiing and snowboarding where it reads as “runs” and total vertical. The mileage only counts while descending. I always feel like I’m cheating at a bike park with Strava going but there is no option to not count the lifts/shuttles.
A lot of Mountain bike riders, like to visit bike parks, where only practice Downhill rides. So would be nice an specific DH activity so the uphill meters acumulated doenst take in account, because those are made by lift (car/trucks, chairlift, etc..) So the general account in strava shoudlkn´t take these uphills as effort you made cycling, because these uphills are very large (3, 4, 6.. thousands meters in a day) compared with the one you do in normal MTB activity (600-800-1500...) so the global accounts increases enormously but fakely
But, it should do count the downhill accumulated meters! We love to know how many meters we have gone downhill!
I don’t understand why the people at Strava have not acknowledged and fixed the issue with DOWNHILL activities (ie: skiing and mountain biking). This is a problem - downhill activities should not count uphill lifts as part of the athlete’s physical exertion. This change is not a “nice-to-have” - it’s a design problem with the way the app works.
Strava should make a MTB Downhill sport profile for cycling where the recorded times are not on the leaderboard of the flat and uphill normal "ride" segments but are on the downhill segments. (both normal ride descent segments and ebike descent segments , on downhill it is not an issue who has assistance or not, not so relevant). the reason, lots of downhill riders are using shuttle buses or ski lift which routes are exactly the same as the normal road route uphill and tons of activities have KOMs on normal ride leaderboards( and if they get a flag , complaining, and set it back to "trust me it is valid" state due to the dh part is the most important for them and dont wanna lose the leaderboard result. or lots of downhill riders have e-mtb, using electrical assistance go up fast as they can and doing the downhills without electric assistance and want to race against the normal mtb or road race riders.
please implement it as soon as possible into the Strava service.
I think this is a merging of many parallel requests so I imagine many of us have been the "original" poster. Not sure why you are defending Strava on this, it's very frustrating that with this many posts they are not responding.
