A great new feature for Strava route planning could be an "Intelligent Explorer Expansion" feature. This feature would analyze your known routes and segments and suggest new, yet popular routes in your area based on that information. This way, you can continually discover new challenges and expand your cycling or running adventures.

Hi @neocosmo thanks for sharing this suggestion. We have some existing features that touch upon what you're looking for. If you go to the mobile app and navigate to Maps > Segments, you will see options like:

  • Discover new places: Popular segments in areas you haven’t been to yet. These segments are chosen based on global popularity, and popularity within the clubs you’ve joined.
  • Go for a workout: Segments where other athletes tend to perform multiple intervals like nearby tracks or other areas where the community trains. See more here.

You can also use the route builder (on the website) and overlay your personal heatmap and the global heatmap to create new routes or check out the suggested routes on mobile.
We appreciate the feedback and are continually working on improving features like routes, so thank you for sharing what's important to you.

Hi @Soren,

thanks for your reply and suggestion. The features which you mentioned are already known to me. They are helpful when you are planning a route manually.

In 9/10 cases I use the auto suggested routes. I just add some filters (length, road/gravel, hilly/flat route) and within seconds I have a wonderful route which is much better than most manually planned routes because it is based on global heatmap. I would like to have another filter which auto suggest routes which I did not ride yet (or alternatively, where I did not ride majority of the route yet), but which are still popular.

Thanks for the additional context and information. I understand now that you're asking for a new filter to be able to be selected for the auto-populated routes that will divert you towards "new/unknown" roads that have some threshold of popularity. We have revisited the idea and it is now open to voting.
