Pretty straightforward request: please allow us to set a default Map Type (eg. Surface Type) instead of Standard. I train and explore in mostly rugged terrain, and I would like to convey that with a simple set-it-and-forget-it setting.
Take a look at ActivityFix (activityfix.com). I use it to set the map type for every ride to "gradient", and it happens automatically, without me having to think about it.

@millardjk Thanks a bunch for the suggestion—ActivityFix is really super powerful. Now I wish Strava would allow setting an activity to public via the API.
The fact that this is already an option for 3D Maps on trail activities (for subscribers) leads me to believe it shouldn’t be a lot of work to expand this so we could pick a default map type for various activities.
This should absolutely be a default feature. In the settings, there is a default map type. But that doesn't allow me to choose a pace map as my default. I have to manually select it each time. Also, the pace map is poorly designed. It uses a single spectrum of light to dark blue, when a scheme like red/yellow/green would offer more distinctive detail. Disappointed in this feature not being available in a paid app where it is clearly possible.
