Change happens on server, not in web client, I checked.
Before it worked without modifying case, and in case it was a newly introduced feature (by any chance) - other gear in my list was not updated.

In short, if the gear already exists in Strava's database, it will change the capitalization to match the existing entry, and there's no way to override it.
