Seeing points of interest on a route is helpful – I'd like the ability to add these to a route so that specific spots can be highlighted and shared with the route (eg, a cafe stop or view point).

It would be extra useful if these POIs could be exported as waypoints or course points to connected devices. Some devices have a special support for tracking distances remaining to each upcoming waypoint, for example see "Up Ahead" feature in the recent Garmin devices. I know that Suunto and Coros devices have similar features too.

I think being able to manually add your own POIs to your route is a near must have feature. Currently, I have to use a 3rd party mapping app to do it.

Another use for this POI feature would be to use it to mark danger areas. For example, along your favorite bike route is a dangerous corner, water crossing, or animal. As you approach this POI your watch, head unit or phone then signals you to the danger.  Seems like a must have safety feature.

The route builder has the option to toggle on a layer that shows Points of Interest.

The request is to add POIs on the route. For example, some recent Garmin devices can show upcoming points of interest on the Up Ahead screen and display remaining distance to them. Garmin calls them course points. Some route editors like PlotARoute.com can add points of interest to route and export to Garmin.

Thanks for clarifying that @Silentvoyager  -- so essentially the request is to create a route that highlights certain POIs with the ability to be notified about when they coming up. We've moved this idea back to the Gathering Kudos status.

Right, but these points should be defined by user. For example, imagine building a route for a race course and placing aid stations on it. Technically, these are not classical POIs but waypoints or course points as Garmin calls them.

The inability to add <CoursePoint> (in TCX speak) with Strava is one of those things that makes routing with Strava a non-starter. Contrast with:
1) Plotaroute: Directions
2) RWGPS: Custom cues

Let the people decide, that’s why Strava is here in the first place.

Just to clarify what is being asked here.

Having made a route from A to B.  I would then like to go along this route and find Supermarkets for example. I would like to mark where the supermarkets are and add their opening times.  This needs to appear on the map while I am riding and also on the route when I print it out.

Ridewithgps is worth looking at as they do this very well

@steveindenmark That might be what you want, but what I, and I believe the OP, want is coursepoints.

I would like to have the ability to add <coursepoints> to my route, specifically for the addition of aid/feed stations on running routes, and also potentially other places I can either buy food (supermarkets/garage) or unload food (public toilets!)

On Garmin and other devices you have the possibility to add some important point called waypoints or course points. They are very useful to get some context of the route, additional information, or remainders. You can give them a name, symbole/topic and description. During the navigation, in Garmin for exemple, you have the up-ahead menu, where you can check the waypoints, distance, time, etc.
