Yes, please add rucking (called tabbing in the UK). It is different from hiking, sometimes incorporating some light running intervals, always with attention to speed, and always weighted (e.g., I usually carry 45lbs pack plus a 20lbs weight vest). This would be of great use to the military community.
Hello and thank you to everyone who has taken the time to add your votes and comments to this request.
We want to let you know that we do not intend to add more activity/sport types to Strava in the foreseeable future, and this feature suggestion will be moved to a status of not currently planned.
We appreciate and understand this is not the answer you were hoping for. We strive to be as transparent as possible and provide updates to our Community when they become available.
Please remember that we receive a large number of idea submissions, and even some popular ideas may not make it to the implementation stage. The number of votes an idea gets is one factor among several that’s considered when our product team develops the roadmap.
Additionally, a status of not currently planned does not mean this feature suggestion goes away. It will remain open to votes and comments, and may be revisited at some point in the future.
Lastly, we sincerely hope you will continue recording and uploading your activities to Strava. Here is a list of the Sport types that we currently support. It’s always an option to set your activity to sport type “workout” and indicate more specifics in the activity name.
Jane, we appreciate the response! Would it be possible to add a backpack as “gear” with selectable weight, to Hiking? That way it is not a new activity but may actually reflect effort better? Similar to adding bike gear weight on cycling. Thank you!!
Thanks for bringing this up. We do have an existing feature suggestion that relates to adding additional types of gear to Strava. I would encourage you to check it out here. We would definitely welcome your vote (hit the thumbs up button) and any comments you'd like to add about how you would envision this feature being implemented in a way that would work for you.
@Jane not sure if I’m more irked that it took almost 2 years for someone from Strava to address this request or if Strava is that ignorant to how popular rucking is. My subscription is set to end in about 2 weeks and I will not be renewing, and I encourage anyone who follows this thread that has a paid subscription to end theirs as well…
My subscription ended well over a year ago... Why would I subscribe to an app that does not meet my need? I ruck. I hike. I carry lots of weight over long distances. But Strava, in its current state, does not work at all for this. I guess they are too busy addressing "bigger" sports like table tennis.
It would be easy to have an “added weight” input for any activity - some people run with weighted vests, and backpackers could add their pack weight during expeditions.
(...) I wasn’t getting full credit for the assignment. The device couldn’t account for the extra 20 to 40 pounds I was carrying. And while I was exerting more energy than a typical hike, due to the added weight, my watch interpreted my higher heart rate as a decrease in my overall cardiovascular fitness. To avoid this, I started manually excluding my rucking sessions from my Apple Watch’s VO2 max data.
