Reposted here at request of Soren from Stava, thank you.

I’d like the opportunity to communicate privately and directly with fellow Strava athletes e.g. gear and route questions, co-training opportunities, etc.; things that are too detailed for the comments section. Creating, integrating, and “policing” an internal Strava personal messaging system is daunting, but what about Strava allowing an email sharing “opt in”?

Any athlete could allow conversation through their Strava verified sign-in email but it would be hidden behind a “contact this athlete” button on Strava. Only the receiving athlete would see the sending athlete’s email and they could choose to reply or not reply and continue the communication off the Strava website within their personal email (gmail, yahoo, etc).  The general Strava audience would not see any personal email, just the “contact this athlete” button—unless it is grayed out because the athlete chose to not partake in this form of direct communication.

What are your thoughts and ideas please? Thank you.

Agree completely. If I’ve accepted their connection, and they mine, why can’t I send a DM?

+1 for this feature!

Allow Strava users to message one another to build a stronger sense of community. Currently, the only way to reach out to another athlete is through commenting on one of their activities/posts or reaching out to them outside of the app. This feature would increase platform engagement and camaraderie. Would suggest incorporating this feature on the profile page and allowing users to choose their privacy settings to determine how open they want to be to receiving messages.

Imagine how great this feature could be! Athletes could message one another to coordinate group activities or meet ups, congratulate one another for great achievements, make new friendships that drive platform engagement, and much more!

We have Signal or Whatsapp for that. Direct messaging would probably lead to spam … No time for that.

Ummm, the moment one of my already ACCEPTED followers spams me, they will be deleted and voila, no more spam.

Why don't you know the phone number of your followers?

You know, a lot of spam comes from hijacked accounts. With DM Strava would become an aim for account stealing. Also DM would add a massive amount of costs for Strava, Inc. Resources that would be missing elsewhere. Why should Strava invest a lot of money into a service, that other companies do much better?

To be honest, none of my 100+ Strava friends misses DM in Strava. Nor it is needed. We use Signal or Whatsapp or iMessage instead. Works perfectly 👌

@tranquillity To be honest, I have almost 300 Strava friend that want it. 👌 So does that mean you're outvoted?

You obviously are the minority in this thread - that's for sure. Time to move on.

I’ve met plenty of people on Strava while riding. We link each others Strava account. Would be nice to be able to connect to ride in the future without having to publicly post.

For those that don’t want to enable the feature, it would be simple to allow them to opt out.

@drtollett 😁 Do not confuse an internet forum with reality. Obviously only people who are interested in DM are writing here (except me 😄). We have a massive bias here.
We are moving in circles. Let‘s wait and see what Strava Inc. will do. I think the financial aspect is bold … DM costs a lot and causes a lot of trouble.

No one is suggesting Strava create a stand-alone messaging service like WhatsApp, Snapchat, Signal, etc.

The suggestion is simply to allow users to contact one another via their Strava sign-in email address...if the Strava user chooses to allow this function in their profile.

PLEASE add this feature - it's long overdue and leads to people posting their private information on very public group pages just to contact each other because there are no other options. People under the age of 35 on here aren't going to use anything except email, direct messaging on the website, or phone calls. They aren't going to download new apps or sign up for alternative services. Direct messaging should have been a feature since day one.

I am a strava premium user on regular basis, upload activities from my garmin smartwatch to strava. I also share post updates with images on it. You can check my profile link below.

I am very much grateful and thankful to the strava team and owners for the wonderful app created that helps me to connect with like minded people around the globes.

I am writing this just as a feedback which strava could include in the app. The only thing which is missing out is the chat feature like if we could be able to send a chat request to connected people or follower rather than chatting or messaging on their activity!!
