Reposted here at request of Soren from Stava, thank you.

I’d like the opportunity to communicate privately and directly with fellow Strava athletes e.g. gear and route questions, co-training opportunities, etc.; things that are too detailed for the comments section. Creating, integrating, and “policing” an internal Strava personal messaging system is daunting, but what about Strava allowing an email sharing “opt in”?

Any athlete could allow conversation through their Strava verified sign-in email but it would be hidden behind a “contact this athlete” button on Strava. Only the receiving athlete would see the sending athlete’s email and they could choose to reply or not reply and continue the communication off the Strava website within their personal email (gmail, yahoo, etc).  The general Strava audience would not see any personal email, just the “contact this athlete” button—unless it is grayed out because the athlete chose to not partake in this form of direct communication.

What are your thoughts and ideas please? Thank you.

Love the idea! I guess adding "contacts" section to the profile would do just fine. I hate to write my phone number publicly in workout comments.

100% agree! We need a DM feature for friends.

Athletes can have the ability to turn DMs off just like on Twitter. If we opt-in for DMs, then only followers can message us.

We need a feature where you can just "text" another athlete without needing their number, using Strava!

I desperately want a function of this sort. I've meant to send invites to rides, exchange phone numbers, ect., but have ultimately refrained because I don't want to share it with the public or everyone who follows me.

this would help facilitate more group rides and enable folks to connect with someone they have just met on a training ride or run or swim etc. I really dislike posting my phone number and email in comments so that anyone can see it. Yes I know I can delete it but it could be out there for days if it is not acknowledged by the recipient,

I agree with many here who support adding a DM function to Strava. It can be filtered to allow messages from all of Strava, followers only, or just off so no one can contact me. It would include a little red bubble on the app telling me how many people have messaged me.

Surely this is a must. No more FB, WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram alternatives. DM club rides, meet ups, ride/race info, segment chat etc to Inbox

I agree, we use Facebook to organise and communicate our group activities. Then we run. And then we all flip to strava to give cudos.

If we could set up events and communicate via strava it would make it so much easier.

Alternatively, if Facebook had an activity tracking feature, we'd just use Facebook.

I have a lot of friends on Strava. No one misses DM here. We all share our numbers and everybody can be contacted via Signal, Whatsapp, iMessage, whatsoever. One app for one purpose. The Strava app is overloaded enough (music, what the heck??). Conversation to the conversation apps. Sport to the sport app,

@tranquillity You’ve already spoken your thoughts back in October, so no need to double down just because you disagree.

We all know there are multiple messaging apps out there. The issue arises when one of the athletes don’t use those particular apps, or some of us want to build plans within the app itself. Most of us feel that threads, workout comments, and external messaging apps just aren’t the best way it could be. We know this because we are currently using, or already tried, various messaging apps, and we feel it’s just not the best for reasons already stated.

And when you say it’s overloaded enough, keep in mind that is your particular opinion. Do I use music on Strava? No. But has that new feature in any way hindered how I use the app? Again, nope. Perhaps if they ever decide to implement this messaging feature, maybe they’ll allow members to opt out so you can continue to do things the way you are now without any interference (much how I personally treat the new music integration).

I honestly think this would be the greatest update to the Strava app and Strava community, make it into another Instagram for runners. Direct Messaging should be the same way that Instagram does it with the option to report things and block people from DMing you on Strava. If the athlete follows you, then you should be able to DM that athlete, but if you are blocked or you block that athlete, then DMs shouldn't be possible. I think this update would definitely be a major upgrade for Strava and draw more people to the app. I get it that there are lots of creeps on the app, but for Strava this would make the app a lot better and easier with communication between friends and athletes and make it a top competitor with Instagram and Facebook. Would love to hear some feedback on this!
