I like that I can add parts like wheel, chain etc. to my bike an get the kilometers I used them.

As winter is coming I'll use my bike on a wheel on trainer (Tacix).
Therefore I change the rear tire to a special one and the front tire for sure will not get any kilometers on.
In spring/summer I'll put back the current rear tire and keep going with the front tire.

So therefore it would be nice to stop/pause the usage of parts and then just activate it again.
So the used kilometers on this part are still correct.

+1, was about to add the same idea.  More and more components need regular maintenance, linked to milage.  Example : waxed chains.  They rotate on a bike, so tracking the bike as such is not enough.

I requested a similar feature over a year ago. I change not only tyres but also pedals, grips (although there is no option for grips/bar tape), seat post, etc., depending on whether I'm commuting, bike touring, trail riding, etc. and based on the season. I think this is something very common to do. I would like the ability to remove a component without retiring it and then be able to add it back onto the bike later.

As others have suggested I would also like to see a retirement date as you can't manage components from the app so it doesn't always get updated until much later.

This is an old thread, but still. Being able to swap some parts like wheels/chains and cassettes would make a lot of sense! Especially now that I'm gonna have a proper winter wheelset 🙂

Yes, this would be very useful!

I strongly support this feature update.

Swapping/changing gear/equipment especially on road and gravel is so common, that it actually, it is rather strange that it doesn’t already exist.

I like the idea to "un-retire" components for when you swap out a cassette or change to spare wheels due to the ride conditions.  Maybe we use the "retire" function for tires and chains that you trash, but perhaps a "chose component" function so you could have multiple items in use.

I agree with all of the above. And also would be great to be able to add components that are gone already, from date they've been installed to date when they've been thrown in the garbage, to compare their mileage with the one's installed on the bicycle now.

Do you guys know what would be awesome in addition to these? If the parts would show gained elevation not just mileage. It would be perfect to set expectations straight with some components like cassettes and chains.

Hi guys,

It seems like many could use/request this unretire feature, so please remember to add kudos to the suggestion as this could make Strava development to prioritize the feature.

37 Kudos so far. Considering the number of users Strava has this isn't much too much ... However, I really wonder why such an obvious feature, so close to everyday use-cases of cyclists, hasn't already been implemented? Really, every cyclist I know has a demand for this feature. Implementing it should not be a big deal as the data is there and the basic functionality ("retire" gear) too. If a platform for athletes fails for such a long time to understand the most obvious use-cases (there are other examples apart from what is discussed here) they don't really seem to listen. It really makes me think twice about Strava at all.

If a user clicks Retire on a piece of gear, the retire date is set to the date that they retire the gear. Lets use a chain as an example. In the (distant) past, a user could retire a chain, and then add a chain as gear with a specified add date. The retire date for the chain would now show as the add date for the new one. This was a logical way for the tool to operate. Now, the tool shows the retire date to be the same as the day you click the retire button. The problem with this is that a user may not have the opportunity (or remember) to retire the gear the same day it happens. This results is incorrect mileage attributed to the gear. Can you please fix this bug by either resorting to the former behavior... or better yet: allow us to specify a retire date in the same way we can specify an add date. Thanks~

Or an even more low budget solution: add a pause button to the components, so when you are using for example a trainer where you don't wear out your wheels, or tires, you could take them out from the equation.

Keeping track of your components is such an important thing, yet there is no proper solution for this type of data tracking, Strava is close, but needs to do something about interchangeable parts to make it perfect.

Yes, this should be simple feature to add and would be very useful.  Like many others, I swap to different wheels, tires & cassette during winter, so makes it impossible to track mileage of those individual components.  Being able to pause or swap components would be great.

Same here. I change my tyres for off-road use/special events, and add return to road tyres for most commutes. Would love to see this happen.
