You know, I remember the forums of five or six years ago, and this was a very hot topic, back then. It seems domestic abusers and ex-spouses would show up in your "suggested follows" and members found that offensive or disturbing. Others found it a violation of privacy that you might be suggested (without your knowledge) to people you didn't know or or ever had any contact with.
90% of the people in the forums wanted it removed (or an "opt out" switch), but the company never did and I doubt they'll do it now.
There are a few reasons an Athlete suggestion could appear in your feed: a mutual friend on Strava, from your phone's address book, from the address book of another athlete, or through Facebook. If you've given Strava permission to access this data, either to your phone's address book or signing in/connecting Strava to Facebook, then you will see suggestions from those sources.
If you did not give us access to your contacts, the person who was suggested to you did. In other words, if your email address happened to be in their contacts, we will suggest them to you as someone you may know.
You can stop syncing any new contacts from your phone by removing permissions to your phone's contact book and/ or Facebook. You can also remove any contacts we've stored by going to the app's Settings> Contacts > toggle off Access to contacts.
Additionally, you can use the 'X' in the top right corner of a card for a suggestion in the Feed Module if you wish to remove a suggested follow. This is not permanent and will only remove these suggestions for 28 days.
Lastly, if you have blocked any Athletes on Strava, we do not show you those Athletes in the "Suggested Follows" banner, and you will not be shown in their's (it's reciprocal).
@Tbobx That's a bit beside the point, that is to permanently deactivate one suggested user or disable this feature completely. How will Strava know when a user has died and nobody does the unsubscribing?
What really, really infuriates me are the suggested athletes in Search. I get the same Instagram models over and over that I have never heard of, whose ““““workout”””” selfies I have no interest in—or frauds like Lance Armstrong—yet no matter how many times I swipe to Dismiss them, they keep coming back.
ONEyear since the last post [?], strava has not taken any action regarding making 'Suggested Friends' optional, eg, a toggle off/on...how simple can that be? While I'm certain that many strava users appreciate/enjoy this function, I'm also certain many others, like myself, want an option.
It's really a pain in the ass that Strava is not taking its premium members serious. How annoying can one company get by NOT listening to its users? Just stop showing this feature! It should be categorized as a BUG anyways.
Especially this answer about "28 days" is really mindblowing! Why do you think we are clicking the crosses?!
