Indoor swimming times calculating overall time instead of moving time

Dear Strava,

It’s really frustrating that Strava calculates average pace based on overall time instead of moving time. This issue discourages users from uploading their activities because it makes the pace look slower than it actually is.

When I sync my Polar device “Polar vantage V3” with Strava, it includes the entire session’s time, including rest breaks, which skews the pace calculation and makes it inaccurate.

It would be really great if there would a fix for this or workaround so users can track even their swimming activities accurately on Strava. And something to keep in mind for the future, what could really elevate the Strava experience for swimming users, is creating achivments, trophies etc… Like Best/fastest 100m 400m 1000m | I don’t see behind the scenes of this, but perhaps it wouldn’t be complicated to impliment such a feature compared to fixing the issue of inaccurate timing.

When I use my Garmin watch for indoor swimming then Strava uses the moving time for the average pace instead of elapsed time. Maybe this is something Polar related? Does your activity in Strava show a difference between the moving time and the elapsed time?

Certainly, Polar flow shows the duration itself and the moving time separately - The Average pace doesn’t match either with Polar flow x Strava

  • Polar shows the Average pace compared to the moving time (1320m / 20m 85 s / 1:37|100m)
  • Strava shoes the Average pace compared to the overall elapsed time (1319m / 23m 28s / 1:46|100m)

Not to mention the fact, thta Strava for some reason always takes away 1m, which can be frustrating as well for people that have a specific joy of having their distances rounded up to 1000m / 1500m / 1800m and so on..

I found some topics regarding this specific issue and there seems to be a bigger number of Polar users experience this as well. But I’ve found that some Garming users do have the same issue.

I’ve found this article that mentions that some watches have an easier process time than others - But I find it hard to believe that a flagship model like the vantage V3 would have such a problem as there is the previous model mentiond as one of the most popular for swimming activities https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/206645830-Swim-Activities-on-Strava

Certainly, I’ve found more topics regarding this issue and most of them are Polar related, but some users whom use Garmin wathces have reported same issues as well but in smaller volume.

Polar flow shows the duration itself and the moving time separately - The Average pace doesn’t match either with Polar flow x Strava

Poalr flow statistics   - 1980m / 00:32:26 / 1:38m|100m
Strava statistics         - 1979m / 38:41 / 1:55|100m

Not to mention that Strava for some reason always takes away 1 meter from my swimming activities, which can be frustrating especially for users who like to round up their distances.

Any resolution?

Unfortuntaly not, I was hoping that maybe the Polar software update 3.0 would have an impact on it, as there are:

“Improved: Pool Swimming Measurement

Refined swimming metrics to deliver more precise measurements of distance, pace, and stroke detection, improving feedback for pool swimming sessions.”

But it seems it’s not compatible with Strava in sharing these improved metrics.
Your best bet is to input the information manually into Strava but you will lose other statisticks like avg. heat rate / max. heart rate and calories
