Just to be sure if I got you right:
Your friends follow you on STRAVA and every now and then this is automatically canceled by, as you say, the app. In other words, your friends no longer follow you and you have to ask them to follow you again. It is certain that your friends did not click on “unfollow”?
If that's the case, I would suggest you contact STRAVA support team and open a ticket. I think they will help you.
