The upcoming 2026 “January Walk 100k Steps Challenge” appears to have replaced the old monthly “Walk 50 km Challenge”. If I understand correctly, the new walk challenge will be based on steps rather than being based on distance. I would assume that means anyone who uses a GPS device without step measuring capability will no longer have a monthly walk challenge.

I phones appear to record steps in strava but my samsung doesn't so to record my monthly walking totals I set my walks to runs and joined the run 100k challenge.

Shep61, thanks for that idea. I noticed that the “Walk 100k Steps Challenge” is recording my walking distance (so I can see my monthly walking total), but of course since I do not have capability to measure steps the step count is zero so I will not earn the badge.

When I joined the 100k step challenge it was only recording the distance for that walk. It didn't show the accumulated total for multiple walks. I'm not fussed about the badge just like to know how far I walk each month. At the moment  I'm probably the slowest runner on strava 😀

Sounds like you have a good plan for tracking your walks. Speed doesn’t matter! I’m sure I’m not far behind you in my walking speed.

I use the phone app and it just converts your kms to steps regardless of how long your actual stride is. It’s so pointless I’m mad. It works out to 70 km which is too high! First they dropped it to 30, then back to 50 briefly this year, and now 70. Just keep it at 50!!!!

I have a samsung which uses samsung health app that does count each step whereas my wife's iphone I believe does as you've suggested and converts distance to an average step. Unfortunately the samsung app doesn't use GPS for steps so can't connect with strava without using yet another app!

Sounds like measuring the walking challenge using steps is not ideal. A lot of people do not have capability to measure steps accurately. Many people will use the phone app, which converts steps to distance using an inaccurate conversion. I can appreciate that there may be people who are walking indoors and who are able to measure steps accurately; they would feel left out when the walking challenge is based on distance. Maybe Strava should keep the “Walk 100k Steps”  challenge but also bring back the “Walk 50 km” challenge. Personally, I thought the walk 50 km challenge was great the way it was.
