[Known Issue] Activity text is cutoff when viewed in Mobile App (Android)

Bug report: On the mobile app, I (and others) cannot see the full text of my recent activities.  They are cutoff.  The “read more” option is missing.  It is strange.  If I view my wife’s recent activities from the same days, I see the “read more” link and it works.  If either of us try to view my recent activities, the “read more” option is missing.  The text cannot be read on the mobile app.

Note 1: The full text appears on the website (i.e., no problem with the web interface).

Note 2: My older activities have the “read more” link (no bug).  It is only my recent activities in which the full text cannot be read on the mobile app.  Bizarre!

Further Detail:  Apparently, this only happens if the text was created using the WEBSITE version of Strava.  For two recent activities, I wrote the text using my laptop and triggered the bug: the “see more” link was not available on the app, making the rest of the text impossible to see on the app.

Workaround: I coped the text to a separate file, then deleted all text from the activity.  Copying back the same text, using the Android phone app, resulted in the “see more” link appearing.  So, something about creating the text on the website may have triggered the bug (at least that’s my hypothesis).

I’m also seeing this issue regularly but I have also had it happen when editing activities from the mobile app directly. And the workaround mentioned by @Cyclo_Saurus doesn’t seem to fix it for me...

Good call in mentioning that.  I have also had this issue using the mobile app once or twice - much less frequently. I had not seen that behavior when I posted here for the first time.

For me, I've noticed it's more likely to happen when... I have quite a bit of text in the description, I use @ to mention people, and/or have spaces between paragraphs. I have no idea if that's related though. I'm more likely to do all of those things in a web browser than when using the mobile app.  The only workaround I found was experimenting: removing the text, trying again without any blank lines between paragraphs (all one solid block of text) and without any mentions of people (@___), etc.  Maybe it's just by chance, but eventually I've been able to get it to post properly.  It's still really annoying!

This is also happening to me 6/15. I did not create the text on web which OP had thought was causing the problem. I made the description in the android app, and it cuts off the end without a "more". I had a typical text description followed by tagging people, where it cut off. I have no idea if the people I tagged past that actually got tagged or not.

Hey Strava are you gonna fix this or what? It's really quite annoying. Even when I make it one wall of text with no mentions like @Cyclo_Saurus mentions above, this does not work and all of my friends on android can only see like the first five lines. Can we address this?

For those future readers, I just solved it. Had the same issue of the other posters. I had my activity originally posted on the Android app on mobile. Then I entered a bunch of text with mentions and spaces between paragraphs, also on Android app on mobile. The only fix I found was going on desktop version, clicking "Edit" and then deleting the spaces and mentions just re-saving on desktop (had to be desktop, android mobile app didn't work) then it showed on mobile. Very finicky and not great at tough. This is definitely a bug.

Also went back and all my old activities that have long descriptions have the same issue. Fun.

This has also happened to me a few times recently. Most recently with my race report from Saturday’s trail race. Someone just commented that I hadn’t done my usual race report, as the text just cut off making look like there was no more. If I go to my activity feed, I see the activity with “Read More” displaying; however, when I click on the activity, the “Read More” just disappears leaving a massively truncated activity description.

There are multiple paragraphs and multiple @ mentions. I normally add paragraphs without this happening, but I don’t normally tag people, so perhaps that’s the cause?

It’s a shame this has been happening for many months now and still hasn’t been solved.

@Lola - just to keep this up to date - this is still an issue.

Details if they help the engineering team:

- activity uploaded via android app

- initially set to private so I could write up report before posting. Uploaded some pictures and changed title on android app while still private.

- using desktop / website, wrote lengthy post with line breaks and @ mentions. Saved.

- now on Android app, after tapping "Read more..." My text is still overwhelmingly truncated.

- workarounds attempted with no improvement! Edit post on Android app and re-save.

Strava is the only social media I post to, let alone pay for. If it's not going to reliably let me do that on the platforms I use, and other bug fixes and app updates continue to be hard to come by, and now the Garmin lawsuit, then I really start to question the value prop when my renewal comes up.

Can you please provide an update?

Is it an understood and reproducible issue or do you need any help from community members with making this happen in the wild? I'm sure there are folks in this thread, myself included, that would be happy to provide more detailed data points or experiences.

If it's been triaged, has it been prioritized?

Hi,

My runs don’t display correctly. New runs always link to one of the old ones and display together making the layout very hard to understand. Please can someone advise how to ensure only new runs show up on the grid?

I’m having this issue as well recently. It’s strange because all my older activity descriptions from months ago are now affected too, even though I never edited them since then and they used to display correctly.

It has to so Something with editing the description field in App and then later edit in Desktop Browser to Change Something or vise versa, cant be that hard to figure it out, its month passed now and a MAJOR BUG!!!

Any Updates or workaround? Tried Everthing to fix it, nothing works :(

Please fix this!

I don’t have an answer (I just reported the problem a long time ago), but the problem often occurs if you mention somebody in the activity (e.g., “thanks @Friend___ for the route”).  I’ve gotten to the point where I never mention anybody in an activity.  I just post the activity, then make a comment on my own activity (below) with the same mention, so the person still gets the message.

But 100% this should have been fixed a long time ago.  Instead, we are getting new updates… and new bugs.  I’m about to report a different one now.

I agree that there isn’t just a single way to trigger this bug (I’ve seen it happen in lots of my posts, even without @____ ). But I did want to point out this fairly reliable way to have it happen with great frequency for me, just in case that is helpful.  Hopefully you didn’t get the impression that I was saying that is the only cause.  It’s hard to pin down a consistent pattern.

No i get the point. So what youre trying to tell me is that you can avoid this bug somehow in new activities, what about old ones can you fix them?

My question would be to some dev here probably never reading this: If some editing in app and then editing later on by browser lately triggered this bug, why are all my old activity descriptions broke now aswell, they worked before i never touched them.

OK nevermind, found the issue. When i delete the link in the description it works again, so they messed something up with links then. Since it was still working at oct 2nd, it has to be a change in the Last 4 weeks. If they did this not on accident but on purpose to not allow links then even more disgusting :D

Any update to this? Have managed to fix in the past but after spending hours editing and re-cutting/pasting my race post is still cut off with no read more option. Also logged in and out and uninstalled/reinstalled app ☹️☹️

Is there a solution coming @Lola
