I don’t know what Strava is attempting to achieve with their maps/routes feature, but currently its horrible and I find it very difficult to follow routes via the app.  Strava has INTENTIONALLY made an app that doesn’t talk to my watch- and wants us to run our apps and watches independently.  When I’m at run club at NIGHT and I’m DOWNTOWN trying to follow a route I did not personally create the last thing I want to do is keep taking my phone out. I also don’t want to memorize a random route.  I WANT my watch to mirror the route to me- I WANT my watch to give me map cues like my google maps do that gives me a small vibration and tells me a turn is coming up.  WHY does my Strava app and my apple watch not run at the same time? WHY would I want to track a run on my watch and my app separately? It is UNSAFE for Strava to allow people to create routes and then make those routes so challenging to follow.  Why is this unsafe? Because taking the wrong turn at night during run club could easily lead runners to real danger very quickly (ie female runners).  Because putting your phone in your face to look at a map in the middle of a run is dangerous - you can fall, you can trip, you can become distracted and vulnerable.  Who wants to be on a gorgeous trail run pulling their phone out every minute or so to make sure you are still on the correct path?  This is an actual hazard.  People are quitting their trail runs because they are getting so lost they can’t even complete the workouts they intended.  When things like this are happening- you are not making lives better you are making them harder and more dangerous.  I am happy that not all male runners have to think about these things- but it is frustrating when it feels like huge companies like Strava are not working harder to keep women safer.  We are ALL running with our phones- for safety, for music, for photos, for communication, etc.  I don’t need an app that is able to run independent from my watch.  I don’t want that either.  Runs are more accurately tracked on smart watches anyway- why would Strava athletes not want more accurate times?  Why would the watch feature not include maps/routes?  This is actually super frustrating and disappointing.
