Motorcycles on Strava

Forum|alt.badge.img+3

It has been brought to my attention that Strava is allowing motorcyclists to use Strava under the e-bike activity. I get the problem with e-bikes populating regular bike leaderboards but nothing seems to be done about motorcyclists using Strava as e-bikes.

Hello @Cat.1 e-biker

Thanks for your post. Please note that motorcycle activities are not allowed on Strava, and cannot use the Ride or E-Bike activity types.

Please refer to our Segment Leaderboard Guidelines for more information.

If you see data on segment leaderboards that you believe is invalid, please use the activity flag.

Lastly, if you see an Athlete repeatedly upload invalid data to Strava, you can report them to Strava Support.

More info here

Hello @Jane

Thank you so much for responding.

I have used the activity flag but have not seen any results. I have opened support tickets and found the same...crickets.

Interestingly when I examine a few of these GPX’s they lead to motorcycle facilities. One of them an off-road area in Marin County called “Marin County Motorcycle Association” another a paved facility in Glenn County called “Thunderhill Raceway”. As well both of these facilities have Strava segments created within them. The MCMA has a segment called “tree track” and Thunderhill has a segment within called “thunder hill west”. Both of these segments can be found on Strava Maps under the e-bike activity.

I have flagged GPX’s leading to both of these facilities, motorcyclists on county roads traveling to these locations. Speeds in excess of 70 mph and using major freeways. The results of these GPX’s are e-bike leaderboards with inappropriate data.

Earlier I attempted to post screenshots of both of the segments, “tree track” and “thunder hill west”, apparently Strava won’t let me .

How can this situation be fixed?

Thank You

Cat. 1 e-biker

Hello @Jane

Again, thank you so much for responding. I am hoping dearly that you can come back to this issue.

You mentioned that motorcycles “cannot” use Stava. Is there some sort of internal mechanism to keep them from doing this? Please keep in mind that I am talking specifically about the e-bike activity. Btw Strava did eventually allow the posting of the two screenshots.

Since my last post I did a bit of experimenting with the activity flag function. I asked someone to flag one of my own e-bike activities. I verified that the flag went through successfully, it did. However my own e-bike activity never received the flag, it didn’t get flagged. Further I went on another ride, this time listing the activity as a normal bike ride. Then I had then same steps repeating. It was successfully flagged. The activity flag did not work when applied to an e-bike ride activity but it did work when the activity was a bike ride.

As far as using Strava Support...there is one Strava user who has inputted multiple questionable GPXs: Excessive top speeds, using Freeways, and high rates of average speed on completely uphill segments. This individual lists some of the activities as “Harley computer test #...”. Furthermore this individual does not hide their stop/start locations so I cross-referenced the location with Google maps, guess what, it’s a motorcycle repair shop here in town. All this information was presented to Strava Support through the “help ticket” function...yup, crickets.

So I’m guessing that there exists some sort of mechanism that keeps motorcycles from using Strava, it’s just not applied to the e-bike activities, just as the activity flag is not applied to e-bike activities.

I’d be nice if e-bikes could have just a little more love.

I tested it by flagging one of my own ebike rides. The flag came through successfully, I can see the flag with my own account and I can see it via another account. The only segment in it shows as excluded effort now.

I just attempted to do the same on my own activity. It said the flag was successful but I did not get the notification at the top of the activity that it was flagged nor did the segments contained within show that the efforts were excluded. I also didn’t receive the notification from Strava in my mailbox  saying that the activity had been flagged. Did you receive the notification from Strava in your mailbox as well?

I got a notification in the notification area. An email I didn’t get, but I disabled most of the email categories, maybe flagging notifications counts in one of them.

Thank you fro your interest @Jan_Mantau

I went so far as to create a completely new Strava account to see if I would be able to flag these activities so obviously done using motor vehicles but was still not able to flag them, or should I say that my flags didn’t have any effect on the public data the segments.

Can someone else who has the ability to flag activities help me here?

@Cat.1 e-biker - I’m pretty sure there is a built-in restriction on new accounts when it comes to flagging activities.  It would be too easy for people to make a number of new accounts just to maliciously flag other users.  I tried it myself a while back when someone had blocked my account but was still cheating to steal my KOMs and found that a newly made account could not successfully flag an activity.

If there is a waiting period with new accounts why hasn’t Strava posted it somewhere?
